I think I will scrap the idea and decide on stopping point while on the road. Thanks for the campsite tip by the way, any more would be much appreciated as we are going at THE busiest time of year!
that could be quite an experience - sometimes they get traffic jams long enough to stretch from Paris to the med
Doing the journey in one go is very easy if you use the auto routes. We do it in one go every year but we book a etap hotel in perpignan for the night. It only takes about 12 hours and that is towing a trailer. Some people say its to far in one go but if you think about a normal day at work from the time you get up to the time you get home is probably about the same.
I agree with that Gary, would take it over a day at work any time! Will look at cost of etap hotel, after a days drive it would be an easier way of doing things, not that the pop up is espescially tricky!
Teathersend, I'm pretty sure you gave us some help/advice this time last year, some areas were busy (we travelled last weekend of July last year) but never really experience an English style traffic jam, We are going to go on the Monday 28th as ferry much cheaper Norfolk line 8am £45 and traffic hopefully not too bad, we shall see! Any tips on a Thurs or Fri return in regards to expected traffic levels, would you expect Friday to be particularly worse than the Thursday?

Camping coscolleda in Sorede, five min drive from Argeles large pitches and only 21 euros per night in peal season. Fresh bread daily and a heted pool with small bar family run (only opens if you ask for it to be LOL)
Spent three weeks down there last year and three weeks this year getting back on Friday. 10 min walk into to the village of Sorede with twice weekly market Last year we went in August and this year june/July getting back last Friday. Temps in 30's the whole time and would recommend it to anyone.
The french go on hols for August and head down south along with the italians so it is busy everywhere but this campsite is nestled into the foothills of the Aberes and then it is just the days out that are busy.
Can give whole list of things to do and see for anyone that wants the info and details.
------------- We would love to hear from fellow campers or even meet up :)
Thanks for the tip but all booked up for our 2 weeks!
Sharian, any tips would be welcomed, we are a mid 20s couple we like all things natural and outdoors, along with being sun worshippers (we pretty much kept to the beach last time) we would like to see a bit more of what the area has to offer this time round, as will be there for a bit longer.
Many thanks in advance

Perhaps it is better than a 12 hour shift at work, but you kinda do the work thing every day. If its the 1st time you have done this its not fun, Mike just try it and get as far as you like and if you wanna stop, stop If not press on, just enjoy the time and do not think of it as a race against the clock. Its aholiday after all!! :)
Kay, we stayed at Hippo in 2002 so its a while ago now, our kids were small and we loved every minute of the place, it was small and quiet with a lovely pool area. However if you needed a bigger site its sister La Sirene is just over the road with bigger site facilities and entertainment at night, which you could sometimes hear from our pitch although not obtrusively....we would go back again without hestation although the kids are bigger now and prefer the sites with fun stations and soccer schools etc
Avoid traveling on saturdays as they are a nightmare.About 4 years ago just about the whole of france came to a stand still on the auto routes. Lucky for us we traveled down a day before. Like jksara said just drive as far as you feel you can handle.
Last time we travelled to Argeles on a saturday unaware of the traffic we left the Hotel on Toulouse OK, got to carcasonne OK and decided to have a look around, grabbed a bite of lunch and got back on the motorway - to join a queue all the way to Argeles
Been to both sites Cala Gogo and Le Soliel ...personel preference is Le Soleil, nicer setup, better pool and the beach was just that bit nicer. My son of 13 adored the place!! As for the travelling, ususally travel fm Nottingham to Dover early hours, then about 6 hours drive and stop in B & B (usually picked from the Gites de France website) normally make it to Clermont Ferrard or Dijon pulling my TT. From there you can hit Argeles the next day. Did get stuck on the Black Saturday a few years back (2 weekends end of July/beginning of August, apparently when all French depart along with the Dutch) approaching the Milau (a must stopover!). Enjoy Argeles, and I must recommend a trip to Collieurs (think thats how you spell it), a little town further down the coast, absolute beautiful. Oh and for your cheap drinks/ciggies ...Le Perthus on the French/Spanish border......have a great hols. Simon

Ok so we are going Mon 28th and returning Fri Aug 8th - late enough to be well beyond rush hour times English side. We will do the usual of stopping around 4pm to look at the map and decide where to stop for the night, however this time we will push the boat out and find an Etap or similar. I'm getting old now and fancy the idea of a good easy nights sleep during the travel days (i'm 26 and very sarcastic!)
Thankyou for all the tips and advice, Sirog will check out Collieurs, we may also just fancy a venture to Le Perthus...
Last time round we took a day trip to Barcelona, I think i'll have a look at other Spanish areas within day trip distance too, adds another dimension to the trip.
Would love to know any places you would recommend to visit and if you went to any Spanish areas and how long it took to get there etc. We go in about two weeks.
Kay - we've been to the Argeles area - I'd recommend Collioure, lovely little town with castle, fortress and harbour - and a nice little sheltered beach. There's a nice more quiet beach at the Le Racou side of Argeles, with some nice little restaurants, too. Drive along the coast road which is very winding, into Spain, and visit the Dali residence at Port Ligat, then on to Cadaques where you can have a coffee overlooking the sea. The Dali museum at Figueras is nice too - my kids loved the stage sets of some of Dali's famous paintings. You can get to the Bay of Rosas in Spain, which has some nice little resorts - and up into Andorra if you want duty-free and a longish drive. In the mountains of the Alberes there are some fantastic views over the whole area - and some hot springs where you can swim. All around Argeles there are castles, and fortified villages.
Argeles can be busy - and the supermarkets especially so - so shop early in the day for an easier shopping experience.
