We are travelling in approx 3 weeks and having checked routemaps most of them go around Paris rather than down to Le Mans. We would prefer to avoid Paris if possible. We do have a european sat nav.

Can anyone suggest the best route and how long it will take. We have allowed a (long) full day from 8am onwards with short regular stops.

Thanks for any replies.

Nick

I'd go towards Rouen then pick up Evreux, Dreux, Chartres, Orleans..

420 Miles - mainly motorway until you get to either Brieve or Souillac. I'd be tempted to get off at Brieve to access Sarlat from the north.

Its a well trodden path from Rouen south for us but we have come from Boulogne.

We get to Rouen at about the same time no matter if we go western or eastern channel - the eastern route leaves us with more money in the pocket and a higher chance of having a stomach lining.

poiplaza.com has french speed camera locations if you want to update satnav

Where are you heading in Sarlat?

No need to go that way. Avoid Paris at all costs. Use your route towards Le Mans on the A28 then onto Tours. Then you have two choices here. Either cut across to Vierzon and onto the A20 (free) using N76/A85 or South from Tours on A10 to Poiters and cut across to Chateauroux on the N147 picking up A20 near Limoges/ 2nd option is slightly shorter.

That's one hell of a journey in one day. With stops I reckon that could take up to 11 to 12 hours. Far better do about 300 miles and stop overnight.

We are heading to Soleil Plage which I believe is a favourite of yours.

Cheers

If you do choose the Le Mans route, you can short cut the 1 st bit by Le Havre/Pont Normandy/ Bernay, and pick up the A28 at jct 14. The A28 is a very expensive m way but it works. 720 kms in a day is a long way with a caravan, unless you drive for a living.

It depends much on whether you are doing the trip weekend or mid week, and if it is "approx" 3 weeks, you should also think about the annual French exodus to the sun, and  the return to Paris.

In general, Paris or Le Mans is auto route, and the A13/A10 link nr Versailles is easy, so I would not dismiss the Paris connection, Personally I would be more concerned about the distance, day of the week, and potential hot spots due to holiday traffic. if you need to do it in a day with a caravan, it would be M way for me. Which m way is up to you, but via Le Mans is less boring.

Oh can't wait to get home and look at maps!

I am travelling from Le Havre to near Sarlat next week (Sunday night crossing)- but taking an overnight stop near Tours - was planning to travel via Le Mans.

Thanks for the information about tolls/motorways.  I am the only driver and don't particularly like driving, quite nervous, and don't mind paying a bit extra for motorways if they make life easy for me!

Happy hols!
