You get Aldi and Lidl in Holland as well. Unlike over here, where they are quite often on the edge of a town (near us anyway) in Holland they are often in the shopping centres in the towns. Haven't seen a Netto over there. I've had a quick look for Lidl in Apeldoorn, and there are 3, 1 in the centre almost, 1 on the northern part and 1 in the southern part, link: http://www.lidl.nl/nl/home.nsf/pages/c.service.s.sts.index
When you get to that page, just input the postcode where you are staying (same word in Dutch) or next to 'Plaats', input the name of the town and it will show where the Lidl's are.

As for the likes of Asda and Morrisons etc, there aren't the huge supermarkets like you get over here. The main ones are C1000, which are bigger, but not an awful lot, than Aldi and Lidl, Albert Heijn, the same applies to them. You'll get shopping centres with all sorts of shops including the above, you don't tend to get the huge out-of-town supermarkets like you get over here.

The Hema is on the lines of Woolworths, sells a bit of everything, Kruidvat is like our Superdrug. Zeeman is a bit like a poundshop, although not all articles are 1 Euor, some cost a bit more, but they sell all kinds. All these you will find within shopping centres in towns.

We went shopping in Albert Heijn in Maastricht in May and were told that they do not accept UK credit cards, so be prepared!

In fact, I was surprised that quite a few places did not accept credit cards - like our campsite for example!

Luckily, we could get cash from cash machines, but it's worth carrying a reserve around with you just in case.

Have a great triP!

You'd be hard pushed to find a shop in Holland which will accept either debit or credit card.  We always make sure we have enough cash.  Get yourself a Nationwide Flexi card as no charges for withdrawal at ATM's and you get a better rate than if you use a bank debit or credit card.

Ina is spot on with her info on supermarkets, we are used to them now and they are so different to the UK ones, the food is always good and fresh and plenty of variety too but make sure you have your own bags or you will have to pay for them otherwise.

Enjoy your holiday.

They don't like supermarkets in Holland, they prefer the old fashioned specialist shops, bakers, butchers etc which to be honest is a nice change.

Just like Aldi UK, they may not accept CCards. However I've shopped whilst working over there for gifts etc and never had a problem.

I loved the shops in Holland - so friendly. They always gave the kids a banana, slice of cooked meat or something, depending what shop you were in. Arnhem is huge and there is every kind of shop there. Also the zoo is worth a visit - not at all like the ones here.

If you go to a butcher, they do a kind of pork steak stuffed with ham and cheese. Wrap them in tin foil and put on the BBQ. Great!

IMHO the best Dutch supermarket is C1000.

There are 2 in Apeldoorn....

C1000 Huiskamp
Schapendoesweg 2
7312 EC APELDOORN

and

C1000 de Mheen Bredewout B.V.
Korianderplein 61

7322 NB APELDOORN

They have butchers departments too with delicious meat at good prices. The butchers make burgers, schnitzels etc to their own recipe. They always have fab bread too!

Some things are not as cheap as Aldi and Lidl but quality is great.

You could also try Super De boer. Again with butchers but a little more expensive.

Adding to Inas list - Blokker is also kind of like woolies and Wibra is similar to Zeeman... cheap and chearfull.

But the best of all the Dutch stores? Vlaai shops. Check them out here. Seriously yummy !

Apeldoorn is lovely and has a good shopping centre. Have a fab time

Ah yes, forgot about Blokker, great shops to have a browse, sell all kinds, toys, glassware, crockery, cutlery, all sorts of household goods.

One other thing about some of the supermarkets and shops in Holland: a lot of them tend to round prices up or down. If the total is, say, 23.68 Euros, then you will be charged 23.70, so it is rounded up, if it is, say, 14.52, you will pay 14.50, rounded down. Just thought I'd mention that as I have never noticed that done anywhere in France. Must be typical Dutch!

not just supermarkets - several shops do it as well - they just don't seem to like tiddly cents - can come as a shock - you stand like a lemon waiting for fiddly bits of change

When we tried to buy bacon like we have it, the shop sliced it so thin you could read a book through it, we asked the lad to turn trhe dial all the way round & give us 8 thick slices, as he did it him & his mates were pulling their faces as they eat it raw on sandwiches so we told them how to fry it until crisp then fry one side of each slice of bread in the bacon grease & dollop sauce on , egg optional.
Well they were stunned at this but gave us our bacon, went back the next day for some more but they had none left, him & his mates had cut & cooked a whole side of bacon & eaten it, they were waiting for his dad to get back from the suppliers with more.
