As im going to france soon just wanted to check a few things:

1 Can u carry a calor gas bottle in your front locker of ur caravan in the channel tunnel ?

2 What is the speed limit on the motaways in france with a caravan?

3 What do i do about spare bulbs as my car has xenon head lights?

4 Do i have to get the car and caravan weighed?

5 does every passenger have to have a high vis jacket and how many warning triangles do i need ?

Thats all for now cheers lee

Hi Lee

1.  Yes - in the caravan, but make sure the gas is switched off - they may check.

2.

Speed Limits Motorway Open Road Dual Carriageway Town Alcohol mg/ml
France 130 km/h (110 when wet) 90 km/h (80 when wet) 110 (100 when wet) 50 km/h 0.5

Speed limits are the same for anyone towing a caravan (under 3.5 tonnes for the combination) but at hills, in rain, etc., there are lower adviseable limits which are posted on the motorway and road signs.  Sometimes there are special signs which apply to caravans only, but you'll see them (say on very long downhill stretches).

3. Don't know the answer to this one!!

4. No - but make sure you are towing at the correct weight, and loading for your car.  If you are stopped the police may just check your weight.

5. By law no, but anyone getting out of the car has to have a jacket, and it makes sense to get out of the car after any sort of incident, and over the safety barriers, so everyone should have a jacket.  If you're towing, then 3 - one to put at the back of the caravan should you have an accident, and one in front of the car.  If, however, it's the caravan which has broken down, and you have to leave the caravan unhitched then you also need one in the car in case the car also breaks down.

OH says you need a set of bulbs anyway - for all your other lights, so worth picking one up if you haven't got one.  Don't forget to take ALL your car documents with you, originals not copies.  It's worth scanning them all into your computer, plus any other important documents, such as EHIC cards, Bank Cards, Driving Licence, Caravan documents, etc., and then emailing them to yourself, so that if anything is lost you have an easily accessible copy on a campsite or internet cafe computer.

Have a great holiday.  If it's the first time you've been, I'm sure you'll enjoy it - and be back lots of times.

On a couple of occasions, I came across dual carriageways where the speed limit was 110 kph, but a sign showed 90 kph for buses and cars towing a caravan.

Keep a lookout for that one.

Also, roundabouts are restricted to 50 kph.

Bertie.
