I too enjoyed your rant John M. I am 38 and was unusual in having a mortgage at the age of 19, interest rates went from 8 to 16% in a year. I paid my mortgage and ate less!! Also 4 years after that I lost my "job for life" with British Coal, so I think I know who I'd rather stick with!

I'm a bit confused - I just got back from Brittany a week or two ago and in most places we found petrol prices to be roughly comparable to at home, perhaps 5p or 10p per litre less at the bigger Super-U stores, but no massive savings to be had. Unleaded prices were around 1.40E and diesel a about 1.70E.
Have they come down or did we miss something? - we were surprised as we'd heard it was much cheaper!

hi , yes we are getting very good weather here in Brittany and its even better that fuel has dropped in price here in france , I am led to believe that diesel and petrol is to come down by 5 pence which means that other fuel outlets in the UK will folllow suit in line with the supermarkets
the only trouble is that the ROTTEN STINKING GOVERMENT WE HAVE IN POWER WILL INCREASE IT BY 2 pence IN OCTOBER GUARANTEED MAKE SURE YOU VOTE THEM OUT IN THE NEXT ELECTION
I think that you are forgetting that although petrol is cheaper in France you do have to pay road tolls on all major motorways. We have just returned from Frejus and toll charges were about €170 (£135.00) so overall travelling is no cheaper there.
One other thing that you have forgotten (or maybe you aren't old enough) but in the years from 1979 to 1997 we had 3.5 million unemployed, 15% interest rates on our mortgages, negative equity, over two years waiting lists to see a hospital consultant, overcrowded classrooms, school playing fields were sold off, our manufacturing industries were decimated etc etc. Give me this "rotten stinking government" anytime over the alternative
Rant over
Oh yes i remember those years well as i was born in 61 however this present goverment has wasted are money hand over foot and for what to make this a Greater Britain and have they ? No the NHS has not improved at all although all the extra taxes were supposed to do that but instead they still closed down are local cottage hospitals
Are the streets safe to walk at night ? No because of the lack of police officers on the beat
The gap between the rich and the poor is Greater now than it ever was this Goverment succeeds in looking after the well off and does nothing for the working man
and you think this goverment is doing a good job - Yeah right
they have squandered are money and to what end ? we have the 9nth lowest standard of living in Europe
Of course maybe your one of the lucky ones who has been more fortunate under this present goverment i dont know me personally i am fortunately well off but i am sick to death of stealth taxes this goverment imposes on us and the fact the less well of always get the the thin end of the wedge

Fuel prices in France used to be much cheaper than in England, but even a saving of 5p or 10p per litre (NatsandJasper's posting) is between 25p and 50p a gallon! Which is quite a saving on a tankful of upwards 14 gallons!!! I certainly wouldn't mind if fuel prices here went down by 5 or 10p per litre (obviously even better if they went down by more). We forget that the litre price is for such a tiddly amount of fuel that you wouldn't notice the difference even in an empty tank.

To say the NHS hasnt improved in the last ten yrs is just wrong, and its backed up by peoples own experiences. Waiting lists are shorter and people get to see there GPs a lot quicker, they are both facts backed up by peoples own experiences. The strange thing is that when people are asked about their own NHS experiences the majority say it has improved but they think therefore that everyone else is getting it bad. So how is a government supposed to deal with people who have a better experience themselves but who somehow think that it still offers a bad service for others. They cant win
Overall crime is down, and in fact well down on five yrs ago with the exception of a few categories. Ok so you may not trust the actual crime stats (i actually dont!), but when thousands of people were asked about their own actual experiences of crime for the recent govt paper there was another drop in people as victims of crime. Again the problem is the perception of crime and the perception of anti social behavior which particularly in the case of crime is not reflected by real life.
So go and vote the other lot in and lets see what happens then, do you seriously think they have an interest in hospitals and schools, they never did before did they. Even if you dont like the current lot at least it put its money where its mouth is, into education and hospitals, ok maybe they could have spent it better, but what short memories people have!!!
Did someone mention fuel!?

So its still worth filling up in France then. I was going to refill in Dover when we go, but its obviously worth waiting and making a bit of a saving.

Before you go check out the prices on http://www.zagaz.com/index.php on the day you're travelling. This website gives prices at almost every fuel station in France - select Calais and find the cheapest - but it isn't likely to be on the autoroute, so you may have to hunt aroound.

It has in our area - down from 133.9 (diesel) to 125.9! Quite a saving, but still extortionate prices.
