Anyone got any hints for BBQs lighting?

In the UK we never usually have a problem - we either use the ready-lighting bags or the briquettes.

In France because we are cooking nearly every night we buy a big bag of charcoal which seems to be more like wood and hubby struggles nearly every time to get the stuff to light - ends up drowning it in lighter fuel, or going through loads of lighter blocks.

Any hints? is there a different technique for lighting the wood stuff vs the uk charcoal?

Some NZ friends of ours use one of these, they work so well, we've got one too and our food no longer tastes of lighter fluid!

Theirs was homemade and they used to light wood and all sorts with it for their firepit.

Christine - we find just the opposite - the French stuff seems to light really quickly and evenly - and the stuff in our local shop is rubbish.  We just light some rolled up newspaper (French of course), plus a few 'twiggy bits' of pine or something with plenty of resin in, or some pine cones (usually foraged around the site) and then pile on the charcoal - and off we go.  When we've finished eating, we often sit around piling on twigs, cones, and things, sometimes until quite late into the night if we're on a productive campsite.  We've found fewer sites now actually allowing charcoal barbecues, though - and this didn't seem to relate to the dryness or otherwise of the countryside around.

We did find, on one airless night, that we could help it along with a few quick blasts from my hairdryer plugged in to our outside socket!

Oh - I like the look of that - but no room for it unfortunately.

Arrange 3 or 4 firelights at the bottom and pile a pyramid of charcoal on top.

Light the firelighters and leave it alone for at least 30 mins.

It should then be ready!

We've been using heat beads in our portable bbq as we got 8 bags cheap.
