Christine - we find just the opposite - the French stuff seems to light really quickly and evenly - and the stuff in our local shop is rubbish. We just light some rolled up newspaper (French of course), plus a few 'twiggy bits' of pine or something with plenty of resin in, or some pine cones (usually foraged around the site) and then pile on the charcoal - and off we go. When we've finished eating, we often sit around piling on twigs, cones, and things, sometimes until quite late into the night if we're on a productive campsite. We've found fewer sites now actually allowing charcoal barbecues, though - and this didn't seem to relate to the dryness or otherwise of the countryside around.
We did find, on one airless night, that we could help it along with a few quick blasts from my hairdryer plugged in to our outside socket!
