Hi all. We're heading for L'Etang for the first time this year with some friends as part of a "chaplaincy team" (which sounds terribly formal but we're not!).  We'll be hosting  a couple of socials at the campsite and also taking a family-friendly service (in English) in Villebernier Church at 11:30am on Sundays.  So, if anyone is around 4-18 August do pop along and say "hello". We're in a tent and our friends will be in a mobile home.  Once we know our pitches we'll be advertising around the site.

Hope to meet some of you there.

Sarah & Steve

Hi sarah,

welcome to UKCS. I personally don't have need of the services you offer, but I have no doubt there'll be quite a few who do. Good luck, l'Etang's a lovely site with a really friendly family running it. We may even see you there as my mum-in-law misses her church services!

Thanks for the welcome Stu. We're looking forward to the holiday and having read posts on this site about L'Etang it looks great especially as we've got kids.  Some friends stayed there earlier in the year and said the site was great and there's lots to do around the place. I haven't been to the Loire since camping as a child (which is about quarter of a century ago now!!) so I'm really looking forward to going back to some of the places - think OH is going to miss the mountains as for the last couple of years we've been in the Alps both summer & winter but I'm sure he'll manage somehow.

Any good tips for vineyards to visit whilst we're there -  we're down to our last 20 bottles so need to restock!! Although how we'll manage to get anything else in the car is anyone's guess.

It would be nice to meet you and your MIL if you are around.

Sarah
PS Checked out your website - very useful weather forecast - looks like the first few days are going to be HOT.

Wine? Ooohhhh. Too many to mention. Continue along the levée turning left out of l'Etang towards St. Nicholas de Bourgueil for reds. Outstanding stuff from Pascal Lorieux among others. A favourite of mine is the Domaine de Rochfontaine Vieuw Vignes red from over Parnay way. Plenty of bubbly stuff at Gratien & Meyer on the cliffsides above the Loire just out of Saumur. You can see the impressive art deco style façade from the banks of the Loire going into Saumur from l'Etang. Don't miss the tour at Robert Ladubay in St. Hilaire - St. Florent, just outside Saumur. It's recently been given awards for their sculptures and lighting in the caves.
Souzay Champigny for Saumur Chamigny wines and Cléré sur Layon for the Cots du layon whites. You'll be spoiled for choice!

Have a great holiday!

Hi Sarah,

We'll be at L'Etang for some of the time you are there, we'll pop over and say hello. Glad to hear your friends liked it earlier in the year, it's our first visit to the Loire area.

I'm intrigued (and naive) , what is a Chaplaincy team? Do you have an exchange with Villebernier and a UK church or do you have an open network of churches around Europe embracing chaplains from other countries or are you an independent outreach team from a uk base?

Here's hoping for some sunny (?!!) days at L'Etang,

Cheers,

pjlbr

Hi pjlbr

Great to hear we'll have some visitors!

The chaplaincy is run by an organisation called the Intercontinental Church Society (ICS) which is a Church of England mission agency. They run international Anglican churches mostly in Europe for people who want services in English.  Most are on a permanent basis but in France on a number of campsites they have seasonal chaplaincys such as this one in Saumur which just operates in the summer.  It's all a bit new to us.  We're going with our friends (one of whom is a Vicar) and they've done it before and really enjoyed themselves so asked if we'd like to go along with them. So there we will be!  I'm sure it'll be great.  The Loire is a lovely area and camping's great - lots of happy memories from past holidays - and a few odd ones too!!

Look forward to meeting you.

Sarah
