hi,

Has anyone had to call on the services of the RAC agents while abroad?

Would love to hear your experiences.

Damian

No experiences Damien, but Ive spent the last few days talking to different breakdown services to sort our holiday cover out. The RAC got me the best deal and reading the cover book they seem to have all eventualities covered.

Yes of course you never know how good they are until sommat happens but im feeling fairly confident

I too am looking into this so am very interested in your thread.  I was reading something on a website about the cost of road site assistance which is a set rate?  Am I right in thinking that if you have no cover these are the rates you will pay.  Think it was on the France day tripper website?  If you have cover with the RAC for example then you just phone and the service is the same as in the UK?

I had RAC last year, and am trying to make the decision this year,

For car and trailer the RAC want £110, that inclusive of 10% online discount and a further 10% RAc membership discount...

Breakdown Direct (Axa Assistance) want £54, and Direct Line/Greenflag want £79.

I called the RAC and asked what extra I am getting for basically double the premium, and the benefits pointed out were...

- RAC will provide temporary accommodation (B&B) AND a hire car - not just one or the other

- RAC will deal with your insurance company in the event of an accident

- RAC will pay the first £150 of any garage labour bill.

Have to be honest, I dont see the above as any value, especially as in the RAC T&C's they state We cannot guarentee a hire car will be available, and we cannot arrange the hire of vehicles with a tow bar"

Breakdown direct will take the car to the garage and take us with the trailer to the destination, arranging to deliver the car on to us when fixed. So same as the rest.

I pay for comprehensive European car insurance, so not a strong selling point to me. So it seems to come down to the risk of losing £150 in garage labour cover - but at a cost of £55...

Heck, sign me up Breakdown Direct.
