We hope to visit the Puy de Dome area in September. I see that there are 2 Camping Cheque sites near there. One Indigo Royat, to the west of Clermont Ferrand, the other La Ribeyre, to the south at Murol. Has anyone been to either of these sites? Can you give opinions and places to visit, walks etc

Thank you

Alex (Hawcara)

Alex - just 'bumping' your posting to the top.  Welcome to UKCS

We haven't stayed at either of those sites - we used to stay at La Grange Fort, just south of Clermont Ferrand, which was a Camping Cheques site - but only for overnight stays before heading further south to the Gorges du Tarn area or the Mediterranean.  However, we've done the Puy du Dome and Parc Vulcania - fantastic drive, and then a walk - but can be very cold at the top.  Nights can also be cold in that area.  Le Mont Dore is also worth a visit, as are the many other volcanoes and volcanic lakes in the area.  The driving is not easy, as the roads are so winding, but the area is lovely.   It's not too 'touristy', with few other cars on the roads.

Hope you get some more replies to your posting and have a great holiday.

V interesting area indeed- If you go up to Super Besse you can take the cable car up most of the way to the top of Puy de Sancy - higher and less touristy than Dome

you also drive past lac Pavin - an old crater which is a must to walk around.

It was less than 10C up Puy de Sancy when we were there last Aug

We love thaat area, Le Mont Dore is nice, as is Langeac (Gorges d'Aller region) The campsite in Langeac is good.

We just had a few days in the Haut Loire area -near Le Puy en Vellay, that is a good town to visit, and the "route des gorges de Loire" form le Puy is a good drive. There are some nice looking campsites along that road, but could be tricky with a big outfit.

We stayed at Les Vaubarlets near Ste Sigoléne. Beautiful site, spotless and well run.

We had an awful storm on Fri 11 July, thunder hail the lot! Spent most of the time emptying water off the awning. The hail actually put a few small dents in the van roof! Hard to see so I wont bother with an insurance claim!

Ended up with 2-3 inches of water in the awning as the ground could not absorb it! It soon dried up though. We moved on the next day down to Millau, result 10 days of hot sunshine!!
