Antwerp is a bit of a nightmare at the moment due to huge roadworks. We stopped at services for about half an hour and when we set off again there were was a sudden huge tailback on the other side.

We were warned and managed to avoid Antwerp when going to De Haan  from Luxembourgh but on the way to Holland, our friend Tom tom couldnt find a way to avoid it without doubling travel time so we risked it and got pretty lucky ;)

Sometimes Tom tom needs to be ignored lol

Had an enjoyable working trip to Belgium this June and even though it was mainly work I was stunned at how much there appeared to do and see in the " most boring country in Europe ".  When I described it to the family and showed them a few piccies we decided we would like to go on a camping trip next year.

I truly thought that the country has been misrepresented in the past, people were charming and helpful and both Brussels and Antwerp made me want to see more, so if anybody could reccommend any decent sites for a family to stay in I would be really grateful.

We stayed at 2 sites in Belgium. One was here. Small site on the coast and only around half an hour drive to the must see Brugges! Gorgeous place!!!

Is is close to Bredene which is touristy but not right on the doorstep so to speak so away from the hustle and bustle but close enough to stroll to the shops etc. There is also a shop about 100m away with gorgeous freshly baked bread and rolls every morning.

The beach is about 500m walk with a foot tunnel under the road.

Site is small with just sanitary. The site is immaculate ! The sanitary unit is cleaned 3 times a day by the owne and you could eat dinner off the floor !

He takes great pride in his site and works all day everyday to keep it up to standard. Highly recommended. He even gives you seperate trash bags for normal trash and cans.

Rates are good too. We stayed 5 nights and it cost us around €130 for large tent, car, 2 adults and a teenager.

Oh and owner is a very friendly guy who speaks several languages so not speaking Flemish is not a problem.

In fact it is such a friendly site that when you arrive there is an electronic notice board at the entrace saying "Welcome family Smith. Pitch number 100" eg.

And one strange thing.... on arrival you are not handed a list of rules !

This worried me as I assume that there would be lots of late noise etc... I was pleasently surprised. It seems to work on a mutual respect and we were not disturbed once.

Fantastic site... should do a review... will do it when we get home

Angie

Thanks Angie, it looks just the sort of place we like. Do you get the ferry to Ostend or drive from France? We`ve never been to Bruges but have heard good things about it, loved Brussels and Antwerp.

Sorry for late reply Alice, we were away when I replied and only used the internet occasionally.

We dont camp in the UK so we leave our tents at the in laws in Holland so we usually get the eurotunnel or Ferry to Calais then drive to Holland first.

I dont even know if the car ferries still run to Ostend anymore?

One option would be to get the ferry to Zeebrugge. That is not too far from that site

And yes Bruges is gorgeous !

Up until recently Belgium had the only fully lit Motorway network in the world - but that is no longer valid at present.

Just a bit of light trivia (did you see what I did there?).

I was just imparting this bit of wisdom to my wife in the car yesterday while driving along the autoroute from Calais towards Bruges, when we came across a large section with no lighting!   Maybe it's one of those urban myths and it never actually was the case?!
