Sorry to discuss boring subject but we're off on our 2 week summer holiday camping in France. We're taking our own tent and driving there. What insurance does anybody take out?

Green card driver's licence - your insurer will sort you out, either free or cheaply.

Breakdown insurance - use Google for deals half the price of AA or RAC. Drove my Merc SLK to Italy in June, 3,500 miles round trip (no room for tent so not a camping excursion, boo-hoo). Speak little Italian, would have hated to have sorted out an accident or breakdown with no backup.

A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) - replaced the E111 form in 2004 & entitles you to reciprocal healthcare. Available free from YouGov on t'internet.

Travel Insurance - again use Google, OH and I got a deal for around £15 for 3 weeks abroad, same terms but far cheaper than likes of Norwich Union. We don't do life-threatening sports though. This covers you for anything more than EHIC treatment, and medical return-home costs if needed, plus things like lost luggage, holiday cancellation etc.

Last tip - take the policies with you!

Hairywol - you appear to be camped on gravel in Bois De Boulogne .... how did that work out ? (sorry to hijack the thread a bit).

As for OP - just Google around, we got 2 weeks travel and injury cover for £15 per adult (kids free) with Insureandgo, that was their 'Silver' package. As for car insurance, phone and ask your insurance company, we were already covered for a certain number of days in Europe, and if it says so on your policy, you don't actually need a physical Green Card. As has already been mentioned, form E111 is no longer valid, it's the 5 year EHIC now (1 needed per person).

Be warned, although the EHIC card will cover you for treatment in the country - ie France - it will not get you home, if for example you needed and ambulance or to be flown home, without extra travel insurance you would have to foot the bill yourself and this could be very costly, so for the extra it would cost, and for peace of mind take personal travel insurance and do not rely solely on an EHIC (formally E111)

You can get some very cheap personal travel cover on line and it would include getting you home
