My husband is away with my girls aged 5 and 8 and for the first time we have let them go into the showers by themselves. They helped eachother wash their hair and turn shower on and off when washing shampoo out etc. They felt very grown up and knew they had to behave.

I wouldn't give it a moment's thought.  At those ages, a couple of girls who don't have any special needs should be perfectly able to shower without parental supervision, expecially (as others have said) as they will be together.

I would probably avoid them going very late at night, but other than that, would let them get on with it.

My son has showered by himself on caravan sites for a couple years now (he is 11), although we have recently been sending him with a walkie-talkie in a poly-bag because he now has a serious medical condition - not because we are worried about 'stranger danger'.

It is statistically no more dangerous now than when we were kids, it is just that we have greater media coverage of paedophile activity due to multiple tv channels, the net, newspapers etc etc.

We used to roam campsites on our own from the age of 7 or 8 without a single incident.  Go and enjoy yourselves and stop worrying!

French campsites are very safe - probably one of the safest environments to have a holiday actually - and children who've grown up with camping holidays are often very self-confident as usually from quite a young age they've been able to 'do things on their own'.

It's natural to be anxious - especially when trying something new. One of the many delights of parenthood.

I feel much more at ease on French sites than I do over here. There's a real family atmosphere. Once you get there you will be able to relax and enjoy yourselves.

Goa and Brazil, hmmmmm, whole different kettle of fish but compare the population of the world to the number of abductions and that might put it into perspective!

You might want to take a look at this site , which is practically on your way. We have been there for the last 3 years and it is a lovely family site. My son has made loads of friends there and some of them have been going there as long as they can remember. I'm sure your girls would love it.

It's a different world these days. we have three boys too and all are fully grown now.

We used to all jump in the waters together naked, in streams and rivers and it all felt quite normal.

I guess it's not the same innocent world now...!
