We are leaving on Monday to travel to Andalusia, Spain. Our route down takes via Millau, Barcelona, Altea and we will probably do an overnight stop in each of these areas. Coming back we will again do three stops but around Soria, Gradignan and Tours. I can see lots of suggestions for overnighting in Motorhomes, but we have a smaller van (which we can sleep in) with an awning, and a 2 man tent. We only need basic facilities and places that take dogs. Any suggestions please?

In France there are loads of municipal sites, almost in every town, and most take dogs (but not 'dangerous' breeds).  Millau has loads of campsites, large and small, spread all along the river - so you're sure to find something there.  I don't know about Gradignan and Tours, but maybe someone else can help.

Thanks, I am less worried about where to stay now. Next big problem could be the weather. We have been warned by our friends in Andalusia that the temperature at the moment is 40+ and the country has been put on amber alert! Still beats last weekends rain and gale force winds.

We came back a week ago from south of Barcelona and it was 40 when we left ! For the whole 2 weeks I found it unbearably hot and instead of chilling out on the decking of our static I had to chill out in the A/C inside!  It was better on the beach as there was a sea breeze. It was too hot to cycle anywhere and walking round the site was an effort too. We took an umbrella for the beach  and dodged into A/c shops  and buildings whenever we went on day trips.  It was a case of going to then Hypermarket to cool down! The Metro in Barcelona was the worst and nearly everyone had to have fans on the platforms.I found wearing a cotton gipsy skirt better than shorts. It made handwashing easy though as everything got dry in a few hours.

We didnt really venture out till about 4.30 each day to go to the beach or explore in the car but I got bitten alive by mossies  whenever I did leave the static.

The municipal at tours is nice., but if you are going via Millau would you go that way? We went Dunkerque- Paris then to Clermont Ferrand? We stopped at Gien sur Loire on the way back (nice town just off the autoroute).

The autoroute is free from Clermont down to Millau ( A75 or 76 I think!)

You only  have to pay to cross the Viaduct which is awesome-( there is a visitor centre before it which you can pull off the autoroute to visit-stunning views!)

For Millau we stayed at Aguessac (8km from Millau) lovely municipal site not far off the autoroute. Its on the Tarn , there is a snack bar/bar on site and a small supermarket by the entrance. It was € 15 for a van 2 people and electricity.

Saves driving into Millau itself which can be busy.

Oh dear we are never happy are we. Loads of threads on here about being flooded and blown out of our tents and cancelling annual holidays in the UK because of the bl**dy rain. The poor old weather can't get it right.

Cheers Latecamper

You misinterpreted my tone late camper- I wasnt intending to moan about the weather but give some useful tips on coping with the current extreme heat in Spain to Paulcool who was concerned about the amber alert.

In my message my tips were designed to give tips while he still had a chance to pack skirts, beach parasol, mosquito repellent, antihistamines etc because the latter in particular is not widely available in shops but only in pharmacies which close for  long siestas. I was in great discomfort while waiting to get to a pharmacy and so I hoped to prevent someone elses misery. Fans are expensive in Spain as they attract tourist prices- he could pick one up from a charity shop for 50p before he goes. If he hasnt already booked I was stressing the importance of A/C.

I have been a member for 4 years on this site- with the aim of offering advice and sharing experiences-  .Thank you for pointing out that it came across as a moan about the weather rather than the passing on of tips  to Paul- I hope he now sees my message for the good intention that it was supposed to be.

Oh dear, I seemed to have caused trouble in the campsite!

All comments and advice are useful to me as although I know Andalusia very well, I have only been to the Costa Brave once and have never driven through France and Spain before, (get a dog, get a new way of life!)

The advice about taking a fan is something I had not thought of and will definitely do as can use this for the over night stops on the journey to and from. Thanks campingmeerkat.

The info about the sites around Tours and Millau is also great and we will look out for the ones you suggest.

Stopping at Bourges municiple and Millau on the way down.  40 degrees sounds good to me!

That soon- why are you posting replies and not panicing about what you have forgotten!

Have a good trip. We are using the chunnel, only 20 mins from home and esay for the dog. Plus cheap with tesco clubcard deals.
