Hi, always been a Francophile, but with the long drive down to south, and the unreliable weather in the North....  we are considering spain, as Plymouth is down the road for the Santander crossing.

Can anyone tell me about the areas within a few hours drive of Santander??  We would like to be near a good beach - nice old towns to visit??  Campsites ??

Thanks....

Jackie X

ps.  or is it pants ?????

Well up early here, everyone asleep and have been doing some research - looks like the weather may be dodgy, even in the summer in this area?  Anyone tell me different?  J

We have visited El Delphin Verde for the past several years which is in Northern Spain but on the Med.

Its difficult to fault as a site. It is big and even imposing when you first arrive but once you drive down to the pitches nearer the beach it is very nice.

Plenty on site if you have children or walk the two minutes to a very safe beach. Shopping is very reasonable if you do not want to travel much.

If you want to look around there are plenty of very nice places to visit within 10 to 45 minutes drive.

I think its about 5 or 6 hours from where you would disembark though.

The summer weather on the north coast of Spain can be unreliable, statisticaly less sun than further up the sw coast of France. If your shipping to Santander you might as well drive 6hrs to the Med coast sth of Tarragona. for generally good weather & hot temperatures Jul/Aug, plenty of campsites all down the coast.

We were going to this coast of spain until ETA set bombs off next to the campsite, the C&C club very kindly moved us free of charge at the last minute to the south of france. I think this was a blessing in disguise as i had been looking at the weather forecasts and the santander webcam for sometime and they seem to have 2 days of sun then 3 days of rain!! On one website the statistics showed more average days of rain here in August than Birmingham!!!

Also I was struggling to find days out for the kids like waterparks etc.

Basically do the homework before you decide, I would also do the drive instead of the ferry, I remember the ferry was going to cost around £1100 with the caravan against a couple of days drive and £500 in fuel for the whole holiday.

We have been discussing this point in this thread. Anyway, as MartyM says, if you are looking for sun, forget this area. You will find beautiful scenery, nice beaches, good food, historic villages, but not sunny weather.

Hope it helps

Can second the above just got back from our trip yesterday, the weather was fab.  A great time was had by all.

Saved just over £100 by booking with the caravan club

Consider the Costa Brava, we have just come back from Camping International Calonge Playa D'Aro, £180 for road tolls, £460 for fuel, £617 for campsite for 16 nights.  It was early 30 degrees the whole stay.  I wouldn't describe it as Northern Spain though.  El Delphin Verde is a great site too, we went and had a look round,  though a bit isolated for our teenagers.
