Just a word of warning about Eurotunnel & Tesco.

Previously in the past we have used Tesco Clubcard deals & booked the Eurotunnel. I have also had no problems in amending our booking, and paying the difference, if there is any.

On our holiday this year, we needed to change our booking once we were on holiday to come home early, due to my son being ill. As we had used Tesco Deals, all of the allocated Tesco spaces were taken until September! (we were trying to come home on the 17th instead of the 23rd). There only suggestion was to pay a single fare of £155.

Ended up coming home on Norfolk Lines from Dunkirk (Lovely ships...would recommend them).

So, Tesco Eurotunnel deals are great.....if you don't need to change them in the summer holidays! Also they are non-refundable, so any extra I paid in addition to the vouchers are lost.

Just thought I would bring that to everyones attention.

We have just had to cancel our September holiday and I managed to change the booking until next year so I was quite pleased. In such circumstances did your travel insurance not cover the extra cost?

We changed our booking to come home on the 12th instead of 14th August for no reason other than the rain at no cost despite paying with tesco vouchers.  I never volunteered the info that they had been paid for this way but assume they could see from their end.  I was expecting a cost so was pleasantly surprised.

Hi David,

No, the travel insurance wouldn't have met the cost, as it was our decision to come home early. In addition, he wasn't seriously ill, that he needed to come back to the UK, but we had just had enough!

I'd never had a problem in the past with amending a crossing with Eurotunnel, but I felt that I should make others aware that there is a Tesco allocation, and this does fill up in the holidays, so amendments can be tricky.

I assume they can tell they are Tesco bookings from the ref number. I have to say that I did not know that they worked by allocation as when I have booked I have always gone to the Eurotunnel website and done a mock booking so that I had all the details infront of me when I phoned. I can understand that it would have been quite busy but it is surprising that they could not offer any crossing. You must be very disappointed. Perhaps we need some further clarification on this issue.

David

You could try re-booking the un-used back to UK bit for next year, or whenever you are next going to France, and then just buy a one way ticket to get out there?

It won't work because you have to have changed it at least 24 hours before you were due to use the crossing. If the OP had had access to the internet a few days before returning home he could have done it then. Trouble is when you make decisions affecting the family the finer points of the Eurotunnel T&C's don't immediately spring to mind!

Nice to know - we changed our P&O booking (paid for with Tesco vouchers) several times this year while we finalised plans.

In the end the ferry we were coming back on was cheaper than the one we originally booked so as we had paid by tesco and couldn't be refunded P&O upgraded us to 'priority loading'

As expected we were late for the ferry and got put on the next one, and still got priority boarding on it! which we didn't know and OH was in the loo when they attempted to load us - bet we weren't popular with the cars behind LOL!

Similar situation here, we changed our return 3 times with no problem, had to pay a little bit more the last time as the price had changed.

Never had a problem changing Eurotunnel times and days.

If I want to come home early I just arrive at the booths and hand over our booking. when they mention the dates are different I just say we have to go home early due to ill health. They've then just put us on the next available train free of charge.
