Hi to all . We are a family of 4 . I have a 12 year old son and a 3 year old daughter . This is my first post and I am thinking of going to Cantabria next July/August . From all the info I've read on the web I must admit I am more than slightly put off by the weather reports . Is there any chance anyone can reassure me as to the true state of the weather . Many thanks .

The north coast of Spain(known as green Spain which might give you a clue)on the Atlantic tends to be wetter & stormier than the Med coast. If you go to the Med coast you can almost gaurantee hot sunny weather Jul/Aug, on the north coast you cant, simple as that really.

Hi

We went to Northern Spain - Cantabria and Asturias in June this year and had terrible weather and came home early, we were told by a porter at a hotel we stayed in though that it was freak weather and not normally that bad.  It really was torrential when we were there and spoilt the whole experience for us, so I probably wouldn't advise you to go there.  Saying that I am sure plenty of other people had great weather I am only talking about our experience.  We were mostly camping as well with just a couple of hotels inbetween because it was my first time for camping and going to Spain.  Then again we were in Crete in September a couple of years ago and it was freak weather with torrential downpours and gale force winds so I think freak weather seems to follow us around!

We spent a few weeks in northern Spain including Cantabria and had very little rain - a few showers near the hills and one blooming great storm in the foothills of the Pyrenees. This in late July-August. Being on the Atlantic you will get the occasional storm but they seldom set in, as they can in Cornwall or Brittany.  We were in northern Portugal this year - a couple of rainy days but otherwise hot - we were told that rain in August is very unusual.

I think it's always important to look out some rainy day places to visit for the one day a week that you might not want to sit around outside: there are plenty of interesting caves, castle and museums to explore!

Been  there twice from santander and its lovely, including the weather. The village of Lanes on the coast is really good, and if it rains, so what. The atlantic rollers are a sight you wont forget. Its what is known as the REAL spain.

Been there twice for a few days on route (July / August) and had bad weather both times! Being mountainous it can be very wet and windy.

We wouldn't go there for a holday but OK for a stop over as the countryside is lovely

Hi he worked as campsite couriers in 2002 at Santillana Del Mar (beautiful medieval town near Santander) from May to the end of September.  We endured torrential weather for most of that time-the campsite owners told us it was "freak weather" too!  We had some customers camping in tents with their children who didn't have  a single day without the rain.  Having said that-the beaches are so beautiful, the countryside and towns on the coast are all great.  So if you decide to go-be prepared-there are the Picos mountains to explore (breathtaking) the bext wildlife park in Santander that we have ever experienced etc etc.  But if your enjoyment depends on beaches and sunshine-don't do it!  Good Luck!
