Its ok, they have new boats now drive on/off like a normal ferry, the older ones required you to park across the boat. We go to Montalivet about 10miles down from Le Verdon where the ferry lands but its cheaper to go down the (free)N10 from Poitiers to Bordeaux & drive up. We stopped using it yrs ago. Its easy to find, signposted as you drive thru Royan look fo 'Bac'(French for ferry)painted in the road.

The ferries run continously July/Aug 7am-9pm can get very busy & you can queue for an hour or more.

Good idea to miss ring road round Bordeaux when Wine Fest. on.(End June ?) We did well from St Malo at 8.30 am till we hit Bordeaux ring road and were stuck for 2 hours going SOoo slowly! If we'd known we'd have gone on ferry and saved ourselves maybe 2 hours in traffic jams.

there is also a ferry from blanye i thinks it called a bit further down from royan.  the royan ferry is used a lot but we met a couple on our way back this year who had driven up to the ferry, when they got there, they were on strike, so they had to go back around bordeaux and were feeling very stressed.

we met them at caen.

we had travelled from royan.

We used this ferry last year whilst visiting Hourtin Plage and travelled across to Royan and back without any delays.

This year we returned thinking we had everything planned -  what a mistake - apart from a 2 or 3 hour delay sat on the motorway trying to get onto the Nante ring road we were them met with further delays as we left the motorway and headed for La Rochelle before our 4 yes FOUR hour wait for the Royan ferry, the local police had been drafted in in to control the traffic as many drivers tried to push in to the que right up to the ferry terminal and the ferry operators told me that they would continue the service until everyone was aboard.

. We had left Roscoff at about 7am expecting a 7 or 8 hour drive that ended up taking about 15 hours we got there after 10pm in darkness, hungry and fed up to say the very least !!

The holiday was great but on our return we were faced with about 2 to 3 hours delay on the return ferry, I think it would have taken a similar amount of time if we had used the Bordeaux ring road. We have visited this region loads of times over the past 20 years and this has almost put me off returning. I think it is better to head for Bordeaux and continue south instead of going back on yourself towards Hourtin and head for Biscarossse and beyond where there is more to enjoy.

For the first time we have travelled on Saturday during early August both ways - what a mistake ??

At times we saw huge queues for the ferry at Royan this year on several occasions.   I would think you'd have been waiting an hour or so to get on at least, as there were more vehicles queueing than the ferry can take.   This was in the afternoons, early August.

Just be aware of this if you're on a tight schedule!
