complete newby to motoring in France looking for some pointers namely best route best campsites for a couple of oldies but not ready to pack everything in just yet we shall be towing a trailer tent.

Firstly, have a read of the posting in the top section of this forum here which gives comprehensive advice about touring in France, and then have a look at the www.campingcheque.co.uk , www.touringcheque.co.uk, and www.campingcard.com websites.  All offer discounts off standard site tariffs, in low season, which is when I presume you'll be travelling.  April/May/June, or late August/September are classed as low season in France - so you can get some real bargains - and going out of season means sites are quieter, with few children around, so facilities are not stretched at all.  There are some fabulous sites in France - depends what sort of sites you like really as to recommendations. 

If you give us some idea of what your interests are then you'll get some really useful recommendations about sites.

If you are driving from Calais, the easiest(imho)& also the best compromise between good roads & least toll is:-

Calais, Abbeville, Rouen, Evereux, Chartres, Tours(A10 autoroute)Poitiers(N10 dual carriageway)Bordeaux

we too are looking at this area, I really fancy a sea view pitch at Camping Panorama,  Pyla sur Mer and La Cigale, Ares before we make our way up to Royan. Going to have a 3 night stopover at Les Peupliers, just south of Poitiers enroute having decided against the Bilbao ferry.

I would recommend La Roulette at Urrugne, near St Jean de Luz and the Spanish border, family run site, very clean and tidy.
