Hi, after much soul searching have booked ferry for next year, Poole to Cherbourg. Main reason is ferry journey is not too long for dog! Have never driven/camped in France so I am quite excited. Also taking the dog which is a first as well. Plan is to head down from Cherbourg towards La Rochelle or thereabouts and make our way from there up to Brittany. A stop midway between Cherbourg/La Rochelle is planned for overnight but would stay an extra day if somewhere special with lots to see. Got to be dog friendly. Has anyone got any recommendations please? Also advice regarding how many stops/places to stay overall I should think about. Will be in France for 18 days. Many thanks in advance.

Hi, forgot to add in post that I'm not bothered about swimmnig pool/clubs etc. I would prefer nice scenery, preferably within walking or short driving distance to a nice village or town. thanks
When are you going? Can't really help with recommendations about the west coast as it's not an area we've 'done' but if you're going outside peak season (which in France is usually mid-July to mid-to-end-of-August) then you could save on site fees by using Camping Cheques, Touring Cheques, or an ACSI card. All can save up to 50% of the site's normal charge.
Driving in France is much easier than in Britain, so you'll find you can travel further in a day. See the posting on this forum (in the yellow section, above) - Advice for Continental First Timers - this gives all the tips and hints you'll need for driving/camping/caravanning in France.
thanks for replies. Any advice on how many places we should stop over at to see a lot of the area during our 18 days or would one stop in the Loire valley, one in the Vendee and one stop in Brittany be a good idea and how many nights in each? Any thoughts, experiences gratefully received. We will be in a bongo campervan so not much in the way of setting up to do. thanks
For the last two years we have travelled from down from cherbourg to the Vendee region and the resort of St Jean de Monts which I think is about an hour north of La Rochelle. It takes about 5 and a half hours and so last year once we got into france we drove for a couple of hours and stayed overnight in Avranches. This was very scenic and had a lovely Italian that night but it was a sunday night and there was practically nothing open. few cafes, bars etc..but it broke the journey up nicely and goog for one overnight stay.
Once in Vendee St Jean de monts is typical seaside resort with good choice of bars, restaurants, supermarkets etc....but gets busy in high season.
Depends what you like! We're not into the clubs and too much commercialism etc so went to Jard sur Mer which is much more tradional french seaside town. We visited from there Venise Verte, La Rochelle, Sable D'Olonne which were all lovely and Tranche sure Mer for some cockle picking with the kids!

I don't know what a "Venice Easycamp" is but if its a trailer tent or caravan then there are very few Aires that you will be able to use: Shame really, because the Aires can be stinking cheap
My honest opinion is that Loire, Vendee and Brittany is too much, even with 18 days. Personally, I would stop at Loire for a week then the rest in the Vendee. Think of it like this - if you had 18 days in England would you visit Norfolk, Lake District and Somerset after arriving in Portsmouth ?
We spent 2 weeks near Saumur this year, didn't see everything we wanted too, it's a great area to visit.
I was also going to recooommend Le Chant D'Oiseau but I am sure they do not allow dogs because of Bracken. I am sure it is mentioned somewhere on there website.

Have read a lot about Le Chant d'Oiseau and read reviews.Sounds great. Wondering about a stop on way down/back for a few days. Is there as lot to see in area? we are a couple and will be going in late June. we like old villages, markets and general browsing...but we also like a site with a pool, and I think the one at Chant is very small. Am I right?
some good options mentioned here - thanks. I was wondering if I was being a bit too optimistic hoping to visit the 3 areas within 18 days, will have to have a good think. ps a venice easy camp is a stand alone awning but we dont always use it.
" SEES" a very pleasant site situated on the edge of town (you can walk to the centre in ten minutes) small supermarket across the road and quite an interesting little town with a ginormas cathedral type church bang in the centre. a word of advice, ignore your "sat-nav" and aproach the site from the south of town
enjoy
