Agree with Val , there is nothing wrong with the French we have always found them helpful and friendly .  Some of the worst and and rudest people we have met in France and other European countries on occasions are the British, Im sorry to say.

We regularly visit France, my daughter lived there for 4 years and my son in law still lives there and they have always found the French charming and helpful

Feeblecat, thank you for that, I have now found it at the bottom on the "my account" page.

I guess it is gambling on currency but I have taken the view that I had an amount that I could afford to pay. If the rate dropped then I would have to find more which would hurt me financially as it would have gone over my budget. If it rises and I could have got it for cheaper, so be it, I've stuck to my budget so it doesn't really matter, though might be an annoyance but I didn't want to be in the situation where I had to find more.

One of the highlights of camping in France is meeting French people. Over the years we have met and made many French friends, who will help and have taught us a lot about French lifestyle(wine) we will still go but spend less

The only downside is that unless you have internet access, you don't know exactly what rate you are geting, so can't always work out exactly what you've got left as you are withdrawing in Euros from a sterling account, so unless you can check your account online whilst abroad, I can see that these cards might be a good idea...if you can limit your cash withdrawals.

That was the only disadvantage I found with the NW - I couldn't get a balance on my account at an Italian Hole in the Wall - so was never 100% confident regarding the balance in my account - we kept a running total in a note book to help. Can't see why the banks cannot provide a balance?

We do the same as you keep a flex account and then fill it up with our holiday money just before we go.

It was a shock this year when i went to Spain I had booked 5 months earlier and by the time I paid it was £200 more because of the exchange rate.

This year tesco clubcard have paid the ferry and the two sites together come to 600 euros for 18 nights, they have indoor pools, and entertainment plenty to keep kids occupied, at todays exchange rate that's £500 so i'm ok with that family of 4 in august. We will eat in more taking remeska with me and now we have a T rather than tent I have a large free space in boot for food.

Too late for me, already paid for the Ferry and the deposit on the site, so I am going whatever the exchange rate is, I remember back in the late 60's, when you got over 20Fr to the Pound, happy day's, the reason why we don't have the Euro in Blighty, is to help all the very rich people, most of which do not even live in the UK, get that bit richer, along with a good number of polititians, thing is there case is backed up by all the Sun Readers, not to mention all the BNP wannabe's, so whilst all us normal hardworking folk, who are working our but's of to pay for holidays in France, we are having our trousers pulled down, by the rich list, and a good number of those folk that think being patriotic is by keeping the £, when in reality there is only one currency which of course is the not so mighty $, so in the ideal world it would be best to scrap all currencies, and just have the World $, come the day of the revolution, I don't think so. call me synical, but why has no party ever promised to give us the Euro, afterall it is the next best thing to the $, because we are the 50th state, but no one likes to own up to it.

Say what you mean, Francais! We were in the ERM, a prelude to adopting the Euro, but a concerted attack on Sterling resulted in (for a short time) 15% interest rates and us breaking the ERM rules so we had to pull out.
There are already 50 states too!
FWIW, the £:$ exchange has swung wildly over the last 20 or so years. I remember £1 = $1.05 in the '80's. The exchange rate vs European currencies has been relatively stable in comparison.
As a further thought, it will be much easier to adopt the Euro at 1:1

Hi mr.paul

Firstly I must apolagise for my little rant, but all this one foot in and one foot out of Europe business does bring out the lefty in me, and no I don't read the Guardian, well not much at any rate, but I fill my car up in litres and pay in sterling, I then drive down what is possibly the wrong side of the road compared to most of Europe, I check my speed, and I have a choice of KPH or MPH, the road signs don't tell me which, maybe they should display both, now that would be interesting, now if I lived in France I would not be concerned with any of the points that I have just mentioned, the thing that concerns me is if they put adopting the Euro out to referendum, Bull Dog Jonny, would give it the big no no, and it would be a brave PM that gives it the go-ahead, although it would make for great exit to be remembered by!.

All this talk of the Euro reminds me of Gordon Brown's mythical economic tests which had to be met before joining. Wonder how they would stand up in the current economic climate.

BTW Just checked my bank account and the deposit for next year's campsite in France has been taken at an equivalent rate of €1.13 (and a half to be precise)

Hi andyains.

You hit the nail on the head, with "mythical economic tests", telling the UK populas that it ain't the right time yet was a good way of keeping all the pro Euro folk at bay, and making the anti Euro bunch feel happy, all in all a win, win for the Government, meantime it is business as usual, untill they change there mind, then whoopy-de, we all of a sudden meet the economic tests, and in we go, I won't be holding my breath on this one though.

Even in the unlikely scenario that we do get Euro'd up, I bet those bankers would find a way to charge us a commission on overseas purchases and ATM transactions. If Nationwide can do it for nothing right now, so can they all - they chose not to.
Incidentally, I just checked my foreign currency stash. With my low grade hedging, I'm about £200 up , unfortunately non of it is in Euro's . I've still got a few DM, FF, Potaters and Dracula's in there!
