Hi,

I have been through most threads with regards 3 way fridges but cannot see my question so here it goes.

We are going to Vendee in France next August for 2 weeks and have decided it would be best to bin our cool box(25L) with blocks for something that will keep things cold in hopefully warmer weather. I have looked at loads and cannot make head nor tail of which one will be best. What should I look for? How much should be spent realistically? We will be using electric hook-up to power it on site.

Paul

Here's my two pence
3 way great if you camp without leccy.

Though they are a pain in the respect that everything stays at the bottom.

We are going to eBay ours and buy a tabletop fridge!

Hi Paul + Tina.

I had this same decision to make, then I realised there are two types of fridge, which are Absorbtion or Compressor, the Absorbtion type go to around 20Deg below ambient temp and are available in 3 way, which I decided would be a push in Southern France mid-July, although I had all but decided on the Waeco CAB40 which I think goes to 30Deg below ambient, there are two models the other does 20Deg, anyway I got lucky with PreLoved, and ended up with a brand new in the box not even been opened WAECO CoolFreeze CF-25, now I picked that little baby up for the same price as a CAB40, what can I say, the CF-25 works like a proper fridge/freezer, as it is a compressor type, so 12/24vlt and mains only, it even goes down to -18Deg, you can set it to whatever temp you require, mostly +3 Deg for my use, no matter what the ambient temp is, also it's smaller than the CAB40, although you can get a CF40, which looks like the CAB40 but again is a compressor type, but is not realy designed to be lugged around, although people do, the CF-25 is made to be mobile, I got the extras like PSU and cover/insulation bag of Ebay, there is a good site on there spealising in Waeco products, I have seen some good bargains on there for both types, some say the compressor type make a noise, well mine is quiet as a mouse, and even more so with the optional insulating bag, and the compressor only kicks in when it needs to, so at night it will not be quite as busy.

We have two different cooling devices for longer holidays - a small tabletop Electrolux fridge we have had for over 20 years and a Halfords coolbox.

Both work ok - the Halfords coolbox was a replacement for a cheap one which broke-down very quickly. It was a special at a camping retailer and kind of reaffirmed that for some things you get what you pay for.

It may be that the site you are going to hires out fridges. Lots of the french commercial sites do this and it is either a domestic fridge delivered to your pitch or a locker in a bank of fridge lockers close to reception. It may be worth emailing them to see if your site offers them. It can save room in the car as well.

If you are using ehu your cheapest option would be a small domestic fridge, £80ish, next would be a 3way fridge box £125 & upward & then a camping compressor fridge like a Waeco dearer still.

The cheap domestic fridge will also hold the most but if you transport it lying on its back. leave it upright for a few hours before you switch it on & take a piece of plywood to stand it on.

Hi Paul + Tania.

Billy makes a very good point, problem is good kit cost's a lot more money than it should, it always does, a good portable Compressor fridge, could cost as much as £500 for starters, when a £150 Absorbtion fridge would do what you want, difference is one might work and the other definatley will, as magicaly says, most sites will rent you a fridge, and to be honest that is probably the best option, if the site I am going to has fridges for rent, then my Waeco will be staying in the boot.
