We have booked to go away in our caravan in August next year, with ferry crossing Hull to Zeebrugge (caravans go free at weekends) and driving down to Lindau on Lake Constance for a week, followed by 2 weeks at Nattersee just outside Innsbruck and returning again via Zeebrugge/Hull.

We prefer to travel on motorways, but there seem to be a great number of possible routes for this journey.  We have allowed for 2 overnight stops each way.

Can anybody please recommend a good route based on their experience, and also if anybody can recommend any good stopover sites we would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks   Ali & Neil

Hi Ali and Neil

We have been to both places but I expect our approach to both would be different because of where we were staring from. To get to Lindau the shortest route would be from Karlsruhe to Ulm on the A8 and then south to Lindau via the A7. This does entail going past Stuttgart which can be very busy. A less busy route would be from Heidelberg to take the A6 towards Heilbronn and south on the A7. From Lindau to Innsbruck the quickest way would be into Austria and along the Inntel Motorway via the St Anton Tunnel. The only real motorway alternative is to go up to Munich and approach Innsbruck from this direction but it is much longer. I than been known to take a longer route to avoid a tunnel!!! It you have not been to Natterersee before just read the instructions about the approach of the motorway as it can be a bit confusing. This is a pretty good stop over site http://www.countrycamping.de/

Went to between Fredrickshaven and Lindau in 1996 from Dover. So you adapt the same route from Zeebrugge which totals about 510 mile although there is a section of non-motorway. From the ferry head to Brussels then on to Namur and through Luxembourg to the French border at Metz. You could overnight here at the municipal which is right on the river. Then A4 to Strasbourg cross the Rhine into Germany and south on the A5 heading to Freiburg. You could spend a second night here, it's well worth a visit. From there heading east on the B31 (non-motorway) to Donaeuschinen then pick up the motorway and head for Lake Constance. Drive along the north side of the lake to Lindau.

Thanks Harry and David for your suggestions.

We will get the maps out and look at your suggestions for overnight stops on their respective web-sites.
