Hi,

We are in the process of booking our first European Rally with our van for this summer.
WE are going to Brittany via Dover/Calais so need a stop over nr Calais for both ways and also somewhere halfway to Brittany to overnight as our two children are quite young.

We have had a van for years & driven solo in Europe a lot & also have a German van so all that is no problem but route wise we could do with some suggestions as to quickest & cheapest way & also recommended stopover sites cheaper the better!

Any help or pointers gratefully recieved!

We are going on the C&C Club rally at Manoir something or another hopefully the first 2 wks of August if that helps or if anyone else is going there.

Thanks
Caroline

Caroline,

Firstly Brittany is a very large area of France so a more detailed destination might help.

The campsite in the Calais area most widely used in Camping Bein Assise in the village og Guines only a few miles SW of the docks. You will find reports in the sites comments on here.

You could be looking at a journey of between 300 and 450 miles depending on where you are going. So just as a pointer for you I would say look at Honfleur at being about half way. There is a very good site not far off the autoroute just after leaving the Pont du Normandie called www.camping-catiniere.com this would be ideal if you have young children and Honfleur is a beautiful old French port which is only a few miles away.

For further details you need to give a destination. Also if going on an organised rally then maybe the marshalls may have some information to help you. Especially if it's your first time.

Hi Harry,

Thanks for your reply, sorry I was so vague distracted by kids!
This is where we are hoping to go:

Lesconil - Village Manoir de Kerlut about 16 miles from Quimper - its on the coast.

Hope that helps you a bit more!

I will read up on the sites.

Thanks,

Caroline

Calais/Quimper is a fair way towing with kids. I would suggest 4 to 5 hrs driving per day with comfort stops. But anyway, if you just want an overnight about half way, try http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=6572 it is easy on/easy off, and would be comfy with "young children", there is a very relaxed UK feel to the place.

Caroline,

Would agree totally with FM in the previous post.

Have just looked and Quimper is 465 miles. His suggested stop is just about half way so would make sense when you have two small children.

The route all the way to Rennes is very easy dual carriageway with aires you can use for a break. Just watch the last bit from Pontabault to Rennes there are no petrol stations.
