Hi all,

We are off to Brittany in August via Dover/Calais crossing then driving down.
We run a LPG/petrol vehicle and I wondered if there is a map of where we can fill up or if anyone has any info/ experiences of using LPG in France they can pass on.

Many thanks

Caroline

This website - Fuel prices in France - will help you find LPG (and you can also use it to calculate your route, and find out where along that route you can buy it).  It seems to be more widely available than in England, and even some supermarket filling stations sell it.

Hope you enjoy your trip!

Also check the terms and conditions of the ferry/tunnel company as I seem to remember when looking up about gas bottles, LPG cars mentioned.

We were there with my brother 3 years ago and he had a LPG vehicle and had no problem with finding fuel, it is marked as GPL over there, all I would say if in doubt dont pass a filling station if you are not sure where your next one is, also you need an adapter that fits in the neck of your vehicle filler nozel as the French pump filler is different from UK one, these are only a few pounds to buy here, and vary from country to country.

We travelled from Calais to Biarritz and back and only had one close call but never ran out at any time, as previous members have shown there is plenty of infomation avaliable on this, and remember LPG vehicles are not permitted to use the Channel Tunnel, have a good trip and dont worry.

We went to Provence last August mainly on the m/ways and didn't have problems finding LPG, nearly every service station sold it.  Was a bit more tricky off the main roads and the ones the sat nav picked up didn't always have LPG, don't know why.

We run an LPG 4x4 and travel to France and Italy every year,we have never encountered any problems, however I will say that if like us you try to use alternative routes to avoid the toll roads, then sometimes the LPG or GPL in France is a little harder to find. But in saying this you always find a service station that sells it, and if all else fails just make sure you have some petrol in your tank aswell.

Before recently acquiring our Diesil Kia Sorento we travelled widely on the Continent every year for 8 years towing with our LPG/petrol conversion Vauxhall Monterey. We towed widely and were rarely caught short (of LPG that is!)but we always kept the petrol tank topped up too, just-in-case. GPL is cheaper than in UK too.

As has already been said screw on adapters are necessary for continental LPG pumps - I found that there are 2 main types and I bought them cheaply from the shops of petrol stations where they were needed. Many petrol stations will, also, loan aforesaid adaptors free.

In our experience we found GPL (LPG) most widely available in France - most supermarket petrol stations and others too. Italy was quite good. Belgium and Netherlands good, but mainly used autoroutes. Germany and Austria much more limited and Switzerland no petrol stations selling LPG only commercial gas suppliers and few and far between. The Germany/Austria/Switzerland are based on our experiences in Summer 2006 so there may have been some changes.

There are lists of suppliers that can on the net - I think the LPGA website has one.

Happy GPL/LPGing.

Tim
