Hi,

We are going to Vendee,France in August this year and are determined to take a few bikes with us(the folding type).
I am trying to make sure I am covering everthing and wondered if any of you learned people new about the riding laws as I know they are wuite hot with the driving laws regarding Hi-vis jackets and triangles etc. Do they have similar laws with cycling and what are they????

Regards,

Paul.

If you are riding after dark out of town you need a hi viz jacket.

Hi Paul

Cycling, and cyclists are revered far higher in France than in UK. But then it is not the maniacs who ride mountain bikes on the pavements (no problem with them  off road,), I am talking about the "road racers", in their  lycra team suits riding 2 abreast on any non motorway. These can vary from age 9 to 90, and equivalent talent/speed. But woe betide the motorist who crowds the over 60's cycle club in their Sunday morning race to the local bar, or someone who ignores the amateur marshalls with their cardboard paddles controlluing the streets for a Dads and Lads race.

In general use common sense as you would anywhere. Country lanes are great but beware of blind corners. The French love cycling (vive le tour), but it has to be done with style, so get into the lycras, and enjoy.

There are no special rules but ideally you should look for cycle paths near to where you are staying or alternatively find the cycling paths first  and then the site.

The ille de Re is one area that is very good for cycling.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies so far, I can't quite see myself in Lycra but you never know????

So it's safe to say as long as we put the same common sense as we would over here to it we should be OK?

What about the bikes themselves, I haven't bought any yet but the folding type seem good as space savers for the trip and as always I would ensure they are up to the task but has anyone used these? What are they like to ride?

Paul

A question about folding bikes would probably be best posted on The Equipment forum.

I know there was a thread not too long ago, so you maybe able to do a search & find it.
