By far your cheapest ferry route will be Dover/Dunkerque with Norfolk Lines, google for their website & book online. If your camper is less than 2.4mtres high you travel for the price of a car. The nearest nice coastal area from there would be Baie de Somme area(google for info)about 100miles south down the motorway. There are of course campsites & beaches right near to Dunkerque but I would compare that to camping on the Kent coast.

To get a ferry direct to a much nicer area you would need to go Portsmouth/St Malo very expensive or Portsmouth/Bilbao in Spain even more expensive, but good if it fits your budget.

Sell my camper? I'd rather eat school semolina!

First, driving in France is so much easier than in Britain,  that you might find you don't actually mind going a bit further afield.

If there's just the two of you, and you can go outside peak season, then have a look at the Camping Cheque (www.campingcheque.co.uk,) Touring Cheque (www.touringcheque.co.uk), ACSI card (www.campingcard.com), or Vacances Soleil Cheques, (www.vacancesoleil.co.uk) for details of sites offering pitches from between 11 and 14 euros, including electricity.  All have easy to use websites, and you can get a brief overview of what is available at the sites and then look in more detail at any you like the look of.

try anse du brick, 15 minutes from Cherboug - 10 minutes walk to beach, own restuarant and bar, although not cheap prices - accepts camping cheques off season

I agree, it's a nice site, but unfortunately L'Anse du Brick doesn't do Camping Cheques any more.  There are other sites around that peninsula, though, which do.
