Would just echo the general opinion ... we do a 3 stint journey
afternoon 1 - Scotland - Cheshire
day 2 - Cheshire - Dover - Pas de Calais
day 3 - Pas de Calais - Macon area
day 4 - Macon to Ardeche
This will be the first time we have put the extra stop in but last year we felt pushed getting to campsites late ... hopefully this will be more relaxed and give us the opportunity to go off-moterway some of the time too!

Macon would be a great stop, before heading to the Ardeche, must be less than 100 mile I guess, I know there are the usual budget hotels in Macon, and I seem to remembeber there may have been a Municipal very close to the Town Center near the river, I could be getting mixed up with another town, so will check, as I may also be making a last stop at Macon, also such a nice town, Mrs Francaise loves the shops there!.
Like others, I would advise against trying to do it in one hop. We have also learnt that it is best not to travel at weekends or bank holidays (July-August) in france as that is what everyone else is trying to do! We have seen some intereesting incidents caused by driver intolerance!
Francais - there is a nice municipal in Macon - very handy for the autoroute too. Makes a good, handy overnight stop - though we haven't been down that route for a couple of years or more.

Thanks for confirming that Municipal at Macon, I have a vague memory of Camping there for an overnight, quite some time back. and only 140 miles away from Aubenas in the Ardeche, which is close to were I will be heading, if I get real lucky with time and traffic, I may make the last overnight at Valence or Romans, which would make for a real easy last 50 mile run to the Ardeche, Romans is a lovely ancient town, I overnited at the F1 Hotel last time there, but there are bound to be Municipals around there also.
I looked at the Municipal at Macon which looks very fine indeed but as my daughter would say I'm 'allergic' to cities!! so we're thinking of Les Ripettes at Pont de Vaux nearby .... if I can't book there though I will overcome my city-phobia and stay at the Municipal!
When are you heading off? We're going 17 July - 2 August.
Looks like am the advance party!, my ferry to Dunkerque is 06:00Hrs on the 11th July. so my second week, will be your first week. which Campsite are heading for in the Ardeche?.

We're going to Les Chadenedes near Ruoms ... it's tiny only 25 pitches but has a depot de pain ... and 3 horses .... which as we have to leave ours behind might stop the withdrawal syptoms!
The site looks nice, another one on my list to have a look at whilst I am down there, only around 10 miles I guess from where I am at, also not to big at 80 pitches half of which are for tourers, in the past I been on sites with well over a 1000 pitches, so this will be a welcome change, having said that the big sites have always been fine.
