Hi all
we are thinking of trying something different and going to Spain by ferry with the caravan over the two week school holiday period at Easter. We are looking at sailing to Bilbao or Santander .However we do not know the area at all .
we like smaller friendly sites and we have two kids one 4 one 11
we like nice scenery and places to walk .we don't like getting in the car every day to have to travel to destinations.
we don't want to travel too far from the port probably up to 2and a half hours.
does anyone have any experience of doing this or can recommend any sites /areas .
many thanks

I don't know about the North west coast, because in my imagination it will be cold at Easter, but we've been to the Mediterranean at Easter three or four times now, and had lovely weather each time.

We've chosen bigger sites recently, particularly Cambrils Park, because it takes Camping Cheques, at a very reasonable £13.40 per night for pitch, electricity, caravan, two adults, and two children under 12.  It's a big site, but absolutely wonderful, with two pools - one especially for children, with elephant slides, dragons, and squirty fountains.  Pitches are generous for Spain, and well-boundaried between pitches.  We've also stayed at Internacional de Calonge near Playa d'Aro - another site we liked very much, particularly the nearby beaches.

Cambrils Park has everything you want on a site, and whereas in high season it would be a bit 'full-on' at Easter it's just a high quality site, not too busy, with excellent toilet blocks (each with a 'resident' cleaning team who are always present cleaning somewhere in the block), restaurant, bar, take-away, sports field, supermarket - both on site, and a short walk away, near to the beach which is within walking distance, the port of Cambrils is just down the road, and with Port Aventura just up the road.   There are lovely mountains (smallish but spectacular) just inland, and in Spring the most amazing displays of wild flowers.  You're a trip away from the Ebro delta, with the most fantastic migrating birds at Easter time, and the Easter festivities in Tarragona are second to none.  True it's a fair trip from the ports you're thinking of, but much less of a journey than doing the trip up and down through France, as we do - all within a two week plus an extra weekend holiday.

We tried just this a couple of years ago, and went to Playa Joyel. [www.playajoyel.com], having sailed to Santander.

If our weather was anything to go by, I'd try to get over to the Med instead if I were you! It rained for the first few days we were there, and only on two days of the 10 we were on site was it any thing like shorts weather.

The site itself is ok, but I wouldn't say there's much to walk to nearby.

Over Easter the sites will be busy and you  may  find that Camping cheques and ACSI cards are not accepted over the weekend meaning that you have to pay full price.

They are accepted at Cambrils Park over the Easter weekend - we've used them several times before - and this year are accepted between 3rd April and 20th June.  The guide books you get with Camping Cheques,  Touring Cheques, and the ACSI card gives very clear guidance on exactly when the site accepts them.  There are a number of sites in Spain which don't accept them over the Easter period - but Cambrils Park is not one of them.  It is busier at the immediate Easter weekend, than the days before, and the days after - because all the local Spanish familes arrive, but still only about half full, at the most.

We are currently in the Castellon area of Spain (Alcossebre) on the med and it was a pleasant 19 - 20 degrees today . It is quite possible to do the journey here from Bilbao in one day so if you can be bothered to drive to the med i would rather than stay in the north

Easter is a very busy season in Spain, and we have experience of a site being over full, with Spanish 'vans parked on the access roads around the campsite.etc, rather than on proper pitches. We managed to get the very last pitch, on Thursday before Good Friday. The Thursday is also a BH in Spain, so my advice would be to get pitched up by then, and don't plan to move until after Easter Monday if you are touring.
