Ireland is great, roads are dreadful, scenery geogeous, no wild camping, people vary from lovely to horrible depending where you are. History is superb, wonderful prehistoric sites BUT parking is always the problem where ever you are.Expensive.

They come over to us for a cheap holiday!"!!

There is a lovely site in Tralee.Woodlands Park.Mike there is very friendly and site takes dogs.It is at 7 mins walk into tralee but when u are on the site you could be anywhere.Tralee is much nicer than Killarney IMO and much less Commercialised.

If you take your van on the ring of Kerry there is a lovely site in Caherdannielsy cant remember the name but you will find it on the camping Ireland web site.ALSO VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!! If you take your van on the ring travel in a clockwise direction.IE Killarney-Killorglan-twoards Caherdaniel and Sneem,as the Tour coaches travel this way and if you meet on one of the numerous Very narrow parts of the road you are SCREWED.Its been like this for dozzens of years.

 Hi I loved Killarney when we were there stayed at Flemings White Bridge quite close to Killarney.  Site conditions immaculate they show you to your pitch, staff very freindly and helpful. 

While in Killarney we went to Kate Carneys cottage. Drove a little up the Gap of Dunloe. Went to the Puck Fair at Killorglin.

I like Ireland as stated in the above posts scenery lovely, people are so freindly.  The roads are bad,  avoiding pot holes, but then again there's hardly any motorways which I loved.

Agree with Sean above, Tralee is much nicer than Killarney (although the guide books tell you otherwise), and Woodlands site is good. Give Killarney a miss, go round the Ring of Kerry and stay 1st at Mannix Point and 2nd at Wave Crest. Or go to Dingle which is lovely.

While touring around Kilarney we always stay at Flesk caravan site,

the nearest campsite to the town, it is only a 9 minute walk into the town, even quicker if you take your bicycle (the road is nice and flat, great for the bikers amongst us).

Sited right at the entrance to the National Park,with campers kitchen,laundry, restaurant/take away, right next door is 4* Gleneagles hotel with swiming pool, bar, restaurant and entertainment. A supermarket is located within 100mts. There are some fully serviced hard standing pitches and the rest are grass , all with electric and the staff are always very friendly. (dogs are welcome if well behaved)

When driving around the ring of Kerry, do go in the clockwise direction as it can be narrow in places, but if the large tour coaches can get round, then so can you. As you go round , be sure to stop at Molly's Gap a wonderful sight and also be sure to stop at the lovely cafe at The Leprechaun Crossing, the "Irish coffee" is to die for, if you are very lucky, you might even see one of "the little people", if you do I would advise that you take no more drink and leave the Irish coffee alone!!

Killarney town is one of my favourites and very popular with American, French and visitors from China & Japan. Yes the ferry from England is expensive compared to the ferries to Europe, but believe me it is well worth it. Another idea if you have the time, would be cross from Stranraer (Scotland) to Larne or Belfast, do a bit of touring in Northern Ireland (part of the UK) and then head down south to Kilarney and go home via Dublin - Holyhead. Don't forget if you travel with the Stena ferries you can pay using Tesco vouchers.

With the poor exchange rate of the Euro, yes things can appear to be expensive, but sure Europe is the same. Going to the South of Ireland I would strongly recommend that you bring your own wine, spirits and beer as these items are expensive.

If you want to do the Ring of Kerry, take your time! Leave the van at Mannix Point (Cahersiveen) or Wave Crest (Caherdaniel) - or both - and take your car around the small roads - Ballycarberry Castle, Valentia Island, the Skellig Ring, Glencar, Derrynane Beach are all very great but totally unsuitable for caravans. Most people that are disappointed with the Ring of Kerry have just taken the round trip in 3 hours from Killarney. Not sure about dogs on the sites, though...

Roads are improving, but there are still some bad stretches between Waterville and Coomakista Pass and between Sneem and Kenmare. Beware of narrow bridges in curves, the van might get stuck. 

Killarney is nice but touristy. The National Park is lovely. I was not impressed with Tralee.

Going down to Co. Cork, the Beara peninsula is a must.
