I have booked the sites, booked the ferry, what I need to know is do we need to take our passports with us? I have read that we might not need to take them with us but Stena might ask for I.D. Anyone been to Eire in the last year using Stena?  We will also be going to Northern Ireland for a week coming back to the U.K. via Scotland, its my daughter that does not have a passport, we don't want the extra expence of getting her a now

Many thanks in advance

Paul

You don't need a passport but you may be asked for some form of photographic ID

Shouldn't need anything but always handy to have some form of ID.     Why not email Stena and ask about it then you have their reply as a back-up.    Where are you staying in N.Ireland?  You will find it less expensive than the Republic - friends of ours were shocked at prices and I don't think too many folks from N.I. will be holidaying in the Republic.    More likely the other way round so make sure you have booked.

Yes Marz, already had a taste of the euro zone, was in Holland last month, £5.40 a pint. We are going to bring as much food shopping with us as we can. We are staying in Ballymoney in Northern Ireland. But what about the cost of the ferries, £635, lucky we had enough Tesco vouchers. Thanks to you both for your replies

Paul

I've been looking at N Ireland but the ferry is soooooooo expensive. We were saving our Tesco vouchers for France next year.

Hi Lassie

What ferry have you priced?

The ferries that sail into the South of Ireland tend to be the most expensive. However the Irish Sea is one of the most expensive crossings there is, but I have yet to pay as much as the amounts mentioned in a previous post, for the crossings from Larne or Belfast to Scotland.

Pity us poor folk that have to pay these extortionate prices to get off the Island of Ireland. Even landbridge to Europe is quite expensive.

Hi Jeff & Sharon, i have priced both, to Dublin and to Belfast but they are both £500 or more. Yes i have often thought its very expensive for folk from Ireland to get to France. We met people from Ireland in Brittany a few years back and they were saying how expensive it is for them. We came over and stayed near Waterford a few years ago and i remember it being about £300 to Dublin, towing a luggage trailer and not a caravan. I haven't tried either the C&CC or CC though.

Hi again Lassie,

Try Nutt Travel 02870351199. They seem to be able to do good deals. also either of the clubs are worth a ty, they sometimes have free or reduced caravan deals.

I have priced a crossing for us in August, comes in at £450.

Did you try P&O they sail into Larne? Also I assume you priced with Stena, if you mention Belfast, did you try the fast or slow ferry, this can make a difference in price.

We are going to France in August, sailing direct from Ireland to Cherbourg, I wont tell you how much it is costing, compared to what I have seen other folk on this site paying for their channell crossings. Did try landbridge but was very little difference, so opted for overnight on ferry rather than driving from Scotland to South of England.

There is a very good site close to where we lived called Carnfunnock Country Park, but gets booked up as it is not very big. Take a look at it, but you will need to book in advance and as far as I know they are taking the full amount when you book, due to the amount of no shows last season.

Hope you get sorted out.

This will be a one time only to Ireland for us with the camper, I was very happy we had enough Tesco vouchers to cover the cost, the ferry only cost £14 cash. We are going on a Saturday lunch time & on the fast ferry, so that bumped the cost up, but even so it is still way too much. We are meeting our family in Ireland who live in Scotland they are not that much cheaper than us.

How are we ever going to encourage tourists to Northern Ireland with the ferry costs so high?    It is a lovely place for a visit and being able to take dogs without pet passports and use Sterling would be a big advantage to so many people but not with the Ferry costs as they are.

We are off to France in June, direct from the Republic to France (£250)( 20 hour crossing with berth) but coming back through England as the return leg direct would be (£450).   Coming back through England it is £134 Le Havre to Portsmouth( 4 hours) and £180 for 90 minute crossing to Belfast.

Of course we chose to live here so we can't really complain!!

allengenealogy, wow thats a very good price, especially for a 20 hour crossing. Where do you land in France? For a crossing of that distance (UK to Spain) towing would be nearly £1,000!!

LD Lines have started a once weekly crossing from Rosslare to Le Havre and it is very good value this year.  The prices naturally soar in July and August (our school holiday dates) Excellent value again in Sept.       Irish Ferries direct to France are dearer but still worthwhile outside July/Aug.       Brittany Ferries do a weekly sailing as well but dearer still.

Thats part of our problem we are still having to go during school holidays. Even when our girls have finished school, they are now 15 and 13, i work in education too, so that goes against us too! Never mind, shouldn't moan too much! We still manage to have holidays away in our caravan!
