Hi

This summer we are getting the ferry to Bilbao then driving across to Gavin in the Spanish Pyrenees. After a 10 nights we are heading North to the Dordogne.

My question relates to the roads across the Pyrenees - can you safely drive with a caravan from Spain to France - or are the roads too narrow and twisty ?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

P.

From Gavin I would head toward Jaca Then Pamplona & on to the Northern Spanish border at Irun & onto the motorway past Biarritz  & up to the Dordogne that way. Although looking on the map, the route due nth from Gavin straight up to Pau looks ok. I aint driven up that way but I think I would chance it for the scenery.

We have been on the route direct Jaca to Pau, but not with the van in tow. Artics use the route, so it is possible, but there sre overhanging rocks which you need to keep your eye on. When we were on the road, 3 Spanish artics came up in convoy, and I don't think they would have given way if I had have been on a tricky bend. My guess is that the truckers use CB radio to clear the route for whoever is on the climb, given the speed these guys were doing.

I think the route through Pamplona might be better, but I would n't risk any of the mountain crossings without someones recommendation. Best when you are at Gavin, is to go on a reccy one day up the Col du Somport, with the car. The scenery is fantastic, and worth the effort, but from memory the twisty bits were on the French side.

Oh crikey. I've cycled up some of these passes and even the main road ones have some hellish gradients. What's your towcar like, and how light is your van? If it's on the edge for a weight match I think you might be in trouble.

Just got back.

We went through the tunnel on the N330 (between Jaca and Pau) - it was dead easy, a bit slow on the French side but no problems at all.
