We are really pleased that we finally have booked our summer holiday to France! We are going on the Dover Dunkirk crossing with Norfolk Line. How long do you reckon it will take us with a Trailer Tent? I'm reckoning on doing about 1.5 days travelling to get there, so if anyone has any ideas on where would be a good place to stop overnight I would be grateful please? It looks a lovely site, with plenty for the kids to do, but has anyone actually been there? Have you got any tips? If you went last July (we travel on the 18th - 1st Aug) what was the weather like? Thanks in advance.

Hi Chutney

We went August last year and really loved it. We would go back this year if we could.

I drove from Zeebrugge to the site in one go, towing our caravan, we left the port at 09.30 and arrived about 18.00 ish.

We don't go mad driving, but felt it achievable in one, because the french motorways are so good, and we invested in a car DVD for my daughter.

We had plenty of stops and made sarnies for the journey.

Weather wise, we had one day where it poured down, but the weather for the rest of the 2 weeks we were there was 70 - 80 degrees and sunny.

The site is big, but well run. The shops are handy but a bit dear, local supermarkets are 15 minutes drive away and cheaper.

Kids will love the lake and the water park, we went everyday. The lake gets a lot of locals at weekends but is fairly empty during the week.

I wish we had taken our bikes to explore a bit more, they could be hired, but its not the same is it.

Satellite reception is good, with a normal dish and receiver, I paid for wireless, about 30 euro but didn't have a lot of success from our pitch (near the lake).

We drove back to Zeebrugge in one go, albeit a day early, to guarantee the ferry, and had a day round Brugges.

You'll have a great time, I'm jealous already.

Cheers

Paul

Hello we are also going to Domain de Chalain, more or less same dates as you!  We were planning on stopping overnight in the Troyes area (there's a nice looking municipal site there not far from motorway) but might think about doing it in one go after reading above.  Like you, we are from Kent, so at least we don't have along journey before even getting on the ferry!  Website for Troyes site is http://www.troyescamping.net/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=3

We spent a week at the Troyes site last year and can recommend, for overnight or longer. It's best to book though, unless you'll be arriving early to mid-afternoon, as it did get very busy after then.

Hi Chutney,

We will be staying at Domaine de Chalain the exact same time as you - and we are sailing Dover > Dunkerque too!

We are going to drive straight down in one go - it seems an easy enough route.

Hi caddyclan, good to know that others will be on site at the same time. I will give you my contact details nearer the time and maybe we could meet up for a glass of wine? only 4 months to go now, so gonna start thinking (only thinking) about a diet!

Sure thing!

We will be travelling with a family we met in France last summer - we were pitched next to eachother & we really hit it off, we've seen eachother every 3 or 4 weekendss since (and we live 2.5hrs apart!) - so we will be pitched next to eachother again this year =) Can't wait!!!!

I think I may join you in thinking about dieting....might just finish this pack of jaffa cakes first ;-)
