There's a nice municipal in Chalons itself, 80 pitches on good grass, some on hard-standing, hook-ups, sanitary block is fine, and it's fairly centrally situated with shops and restaurants almost on the doorstep.

It's not a cheap municipal though, or wasn't when we were there (some years ago, I may add).

Camping Municipal Val de Vesle, 51360 Val de Vesle, Tel 03260391 might be worth considering. Its quite a basic site south of Reims. A few years ago they rebuilt the toilet block.

+1 recommendation - close to canal for walks/bikes (not m/bikes!) - you can cycle to Reims.

Loads of biting horse-flies when we were there but maybe seasonal?

Activity adventure park quite close - looks good for kids large and small.

Interesting WW II cemetary a few miles north supermarket near there too

No restaurant/shop on site - just what I like!

I can second the recommendation for the municipal at Chalons. Its fairly well signposted, clean and not too expensive. There is a boulangerie within an easy walk, a reasonable but basic take away and the wine on site isn't too expensive either.

We used the municipal campsite at Epernay in the summer last year, 10-15 miles south of Reims,used by a mixture of overnighters and longer stays, including motorcyclists. Grass pitches, riverside location, take-away van - would recommend. You can book in advance via e-mail (English spoken) or just turn up!

I can second Guignicourt site.  Had lovely overnight pitch on our way to Jura and Annecy last summer.  Was a little worried after seeing posts on here re. dispute, but we had no problems and very good value for 5.

Stayed at Chalons site on return trip, and was lovely site, but did think it rather expensive for an overnighter.  Facilities lovely tho, and had nice meal at the cafe, with free frites refill, so very popular with our kids!!

These were are first experiences of municipals and now we feel able to travel to travel more freely, without booking, esp as our kids are growing up.
