Tent, motor home or caravan?
We've done tenting in Austria as well as take our caravan and never had any problems. The drive over there is a doddle, it takes me approx 24hours from Yorkshire to central Austria including an overnight sleep in the caravan.
Motorway services in Europe are great and thats where we overnight. Not too keen on the French ones though. You can certainly tell the difference!
Roads and routes are easy to follow, but be aware that most routes/roads have more than one name. A road could be the A8 and also the E52. But the "E" name just refers to it being a European transit route. So you might be following an "E" route, so all you have to do is follow those signs, and you can ignore the "A" road bit as they will change. Quite handy really once you realise what they mean.
If you have sat nav with Euro maps then it gets even easier. I've done the trip many times prior to sat nav, and 3 times with sat nav, and using my TomTom made it easier as you're not having to read every single road sign.
Every site we've stayed in across Austria has the same blue hookups as in the UK. And no problem with polarity like in France!. Majority of Austrian sites we've used also had water and grey water drain for every pitch or shared between 2 pitches. So get yourself a mains water connection to save manually filling the aquaroll up!
I could go on for hours but I need to go to work.
