We were there a few years ago and we have friends who have a mobile home there, nice site plenty to do can imagine very busy high season, we tend to go to La Rive now as we like the lake better.  We drive usually landing at Roscoff or St Malo auto route most of the way down we go Rennes, Nantes, Niort and then Bordeaux only 1 toll road which is about 28 euros, we tow a boat and on the way home we leave site around 8.15am and are pulling into Roscoff around 5.30 6ish depending on traffic. Site is quite isolated so you need to drive to the towns and the beach but both Mimizan and Biscarosse plage are great for surfing body boarding. Any other questions please ask.

We were there last July and enjoyed it so much we're booked again for this July!

We were maybe a bit spoiled with the mobile home - take a look at our gallery image - it was privately owned and like new.

It's a really quiet site, off the beaten track, but there's a little beach at the lakeside and great cycle paths to dawdle along. Kid's area has a 'Go Ape' type course.

Pools are great fun and a massive draw for the kids.

If you're looking for sophisticated evening entertainment, don't book this site - it's more of a hotch-potch of shows for the kids and a fairly quiet bar area.

BTW we drove down to Canterbury from Scotland, and had a night in the Travelodge there before taking the ferry to Calais and driving all the way down to Aquitaine. No probs with the roads - they're great compared to ours - however we did get stuck in a lorry driver dispute not long after we left Calais and moved 3 miles in about 4 hours!!!!!!   Thank goodness for air con!

Loads of places to stop and have picnic en route at 'Aires' - we found it best to stop at the ones without shops/cafes as they're quieter.

DART18 - we're towing a boat this year to use on the lake, any advice on documentation, hints tips etc?

I don't think you need any documentation but if you have any probably as well to take it! We normally rig ours and leave it by the side of the lake ready for use, we booked this when booking with campsite at La Rive this is very safe. No problems towing we tend to stick to main routes. What kind of boat are you taking?

I havn't been for a couple of years but towed a caravan there twice. Great site with great lakeside beach. Last time we were there the lake was warmer than the swimming pool. However I do think that the 'independant' camper, those that take their caravans and tents are the poor relations on the site. The pitches can be difficult, some with trees in the middle of them.

I've never taken a boat but from memory, having spoken to some boat owners whilst there, you should go to the Mairie or similar in Gastes - the nearest town/village - and buy a permit to use a boat on the lake. The permit should be displayed somewhere on the boat. Of course it may have all changed, I am going back a good couple of years but I would check.

Dart18 - it's a Bayliner Capri bowrider. Looking to do some waterskiing on the lake and to use it to have a nosey around the perimeter and just get away from everyone for peace and quiet. Not really going to use it anywhere else there.

Trooper - thanks for the info. Think we might ring the site just to check on current situation about using the lake.

we went there in 2007, and it is a lovely site but what a trek, we did dover to calais, and without our sat nav, i dont think we would ever have found it,

we left liverpool at 6pm on the wednesday evening, and travelled down to dover through the night, eventually arrived friday morning 2am in the pitch black and thoroughly exhausted, we didnt think it would be that far, so didnt do an overnight stop

site is nice, but they did attempt to place us and our unit in between two trees, approx 10 ft wide, this however was not their 100m2 pitches as stated in brochure,

so proceeded to look at that time in the morning for a  pitch that would accomodate us and picked a corner pitch not far from the lake,

toilets are quite basic, and both male and female use them,

entertainment was limited, even though end of season was september

we went 2nd and 3rd week in august,

and beware you have to leave your footwear on a rack before you go into the pool

(a lovely pool) however, on returning to pick my husbands summer shoes back up (they were not cheap ones) they had been stolen, notified the site staff who were of no help at all, and proceeded to ask us to drive to the gardam (police) to report the incident,

they are apparantly not held responsible for theft, altho they request that you leave them there,

we found biscarosse beach beautiful if not a little fierce at times, and most of the food/shops closed in the afternoon.

however, if was a nice site, despite all of that, and probably just a little far to go for the inexperienced person towing to france for the first time,

lake is what i would describe as dirty, and would not attempt to swim in it, but there was plenty of people doing so,

elaine

we went for the 2nd time last may. we stayed in one of there caravans the 1st time we went, took our tent last year. we had the whole touring bit to ourselves so were allowed to choose our own pitches (friends with a touring caravan came with us) the drive is do-able in a day, we always do it on the way back (to derbyshire with a dover/calais crossing & 4 kids in the car!) we had an over night near tours on the way down because we didn't fancy pitching in the dark. when we went 4yrs ago it was the last 2 weeks of august and the touring area was full the first week & empty the 2nd. the womans &mens washrooms are housed in the same building but with seperate enterances & are completely seperate, although you can hear them the other side of the wall. the site was being used by school groups attending the rockley watersports school whle we were there in may which did mean there was an hour or so every morning & evening where the whole wash block was overtaken by teenagers doing there hair (just as bad in the mens) shouldn't be a problem in august. our friends had never travelled to france before & it was there 1st trip with their caravan & they found it too much & wouldn't do it again - but they're wusses! we're of to bonne anse plage another siblu site next month & plan to do it without an overnight stop, it's about 2 hrs closer to calais. the beach onsite at la reserve is lovely & really safe for kids, the water is shallow for quite a long way out, the beaches at mimizan & i can't remember the other one are nice but very dangerous for little ones, we very nearly had 2 of the kids drown (they were rescued by french surfers)

I would check on when you can use the lake for water ski-ing as I know at La Rive they have restricted the times that you can use boats for water ski-ing and jet skis would be a  shame to take it all that way and then not be able to use it. As regards leaving footwear in racks outside pool I just put them in my bag so they are safe.
