Hi Chalkie.

I have been going to France since 1962!, the country is made for camping, I only go to the South, the Med is great but packed at peak, I am now going to the Ardeche, new for me but in hope that it will not be quite as busy as the Med in July, it is the climate that makes France so wonderfull, in all the years I have been going, only ever seen rain in the Northern regions, on my way South or coming back, in fact if I only go camping in France each year I would be happy, have had to many washed out camping holidays in the uk to know better, than even bother going!.

France every time for us for our main holiday. Sub £50 to cross the channel solo. A further 350 miles south and you are in noticeably better weather. Different culture, food, language. Nice people who love to listen to you struggle with your O Level French circa 1970. Two weeks of totally different experiences and sights. You cant beat it.

We went for the first time last year, after years of just talking about it, we loved it so much went back again in Aug, have booked up for this year too, cant wait!! Its fab!!

we preferred portsmouth - cherbough ferry crossing (£220 for car, caravan and 3 people in Aug!!) to dover - calais (too much driving, depending where you go to of course)

go for it sure you will love it too!

I guess on a budget its a question of comparing the cost of the cheaper eastern crossings plus the extra travvelling compared with the central or western crossings. Im saying extra travelling as if there is a less than wonderful part of France its probably the north east where the cheaper routes are.

France is a fantastic place to stay/camp. You can do it at a reasonable cost too. I agree with everyone else, just do it. Im sure you and your family will love it.
