Hi

We are looking to go to France later in the year and have just checked the website of the campsite we would like to stay. They have suggested that we need an electrical lead (50m) with a European standard plug (blue 3-pin plug). We can obviously get hold of the electrical lead, however we are a little confused on what plug is needed.

We have searched the internet looking for stockists and it is giving conflicting information.

The blue euro 3 pin plug is the standard plug that comes on any tent camping EHU like this one that you buy in camping shops. It comes with a 20m lead so you would need to buy an extension as well. If you already have EHU suitable for this country then you will just need an extension cable as some french sites have shared electrical bollards and can be a good distance from your pitch.

A 50m lead is very long, most tent ehu leads are 25m max which I think is the longest you are supposed to have, also uk supplied leads are thick & heavy 16amp, more than you will probabley need.

The French do seem to take a different attitude to electrics. Their normal equipment is often an ordinary household thin 50m cable drum into which they plug their appliances, no RCD protection as on UK tent EHUs.

If you must have a 50mtre cable for all events & you are not woried about having RCD protection, do this:- Buy a 50m cable drum from B&Qs, from a caravan shop(or Halfords)buy a blue/white socket & a blue/white to French plug(aka French adaptor)as shown in the above links. Cut off UK domestic 3 pin plug from end of cable drum & replace with blue/white plug, job done, cheapish.

If you want to spend loads more money buy a 20 mtre Tent EHU, a 25mtre caravan extention lead(giving you 45mtres if required)& a French adaptor.

Its unusual, but not unknown to need more than a 25mtre lead.
