Myself, my wife and our 2 year old daughter are heading over to Brittany with our folding camper at the end of this month for a couple of weeks. We are looking for somewhere suitable to pitch up.

We are looking for a campsite where there will be suitable facilities for our daughter, i.e. a playgound, nice pool etc, but is friendly and not too busy. Benodet was somewhere that has been recommended to us but we just can't decide on either the location or the site.

We are looking for a site with good facilities but ideally not too much of a cheesy 'holiday camp' atmosphere. Does anyone have any recommendations or experiences they would be able to share?

Also as this is our first visit to this area, will we need to book in advance at this time of year as at the moment we are not sure if we would move to somewhere else for the second half of the holiday.

Thanks in advance for any advice

I can highly recommend Camping de la Plage at La Trinite sur Mer. Direct access to a lovely beach, excellent pool and it wont be busy at that time of year (some pitches a bit tight but you should have a pick of pitches then, we went at the end of May 2007). No shop on site but 2 mins up lane is a shop the site shares with its sister site which also looks great (Camping de la Baie). I think either of these sites would be perfect for a family holiday in Brittany. Nearby Carnac is nice with a good market and your 2 year old might love the road train ride from outside the site which takes you round the standing stones, La Trinite sur mer and Carnac. You can walk into La Trinite which is a nice place with several good places to eat.

I dont think you would need to book, La Plage had about 1/3 of its pitches empty when we were there. I've just had a look at their website and the video would have be taken in high season. At the end of may, there is no entertainment etc. There are quite a few statics on site (Eurocamp mainly) but the site is quiet and run by a very nice French family.

Another really nice place is La Foret (between Concarneau and Benodet). We stayed at Camping les Saules. This is our perfect site and would go back every year but the weather is unreliable. The site has direct beach access (site has some pitches over the road so ask for beachside pitch but all the facilities are on the beachside except the shop). The beach is fabulous, very safe for children and there is the most wonderful cafe/bistro right on the beach two mins from the site where we have sat eating a wonderful 3 course set lunch whilst our children played metres from us. The beach comes right up to the cafe. I could rave on forever about this area of France.

Camping Mane Guernehue at Baden near Vannes is a lovely site. The pool complex is excellent and has a gently sloping beach style entry to the water which would be great for a two year old. There is also an indoor pool now in case the weather is not so great. Beautiful area which tends to get the best weather in Brittany.

Try the Camping Cheque website www.campingcheque.co.uk for several sites in Brittany, all of which will cost only £13.40 per night for pitch, car and caravan (or tent or motorhome) and electric hook-up.  Mane Guernehue described above is one of the sites which will take Camping Cheques.

Outside mid-July to mid-August you're likely to find campsites quiet and extremely pleasant - few children will be there, apart from families with very young children like yourselves.

camping du Letty in Benodet is a really nice campsite.  No pool but almost on the beach with an excellent shop and within a cycle or 20 minute walk of the centre of Benodet.  Definitely not cheesey!
