Hi. This may be a silly question, but me and my wife and our 3 year old are going camping in france soon and i was thinking of getting a camping carnet but i wasn't to sure whether we need one each or we could just get away with having one? Any help on the matter would be great thanks.
James.

The Camping & Caravanning Club also sells them, but you have to be a member, as you do with the Caravan Club. The RAC also issues them, but again, you have to be a member, and they are also more expensive, at £6.50!!
A Camping Carnet is a card which gives identifying details, provides some third party insurance cover, and is widely used in Europe as a form of ID on campsites. We don't have one, and usually a campsite will ask for a passport as a form of ID. These days they often just photocopy it and give you it back, at one time it was retained by the site until you'd paid for your stay.
I'm a bit confused about this card. We've never had one for France and have been quite a number of times over the years and nobody has ever asked for it.
I have had the impression from reading posts on the forum that we need one if we travel to Germany and not sure about Holland, Belgium etc. Can somebody clarify this for me?
I don't understand why it has become necessary to join some club or another to get one if this is the case.

It isn't compulsary, but very useful. Some sites like to hang on to your passport until you leave, which isn't something I am comfortable with, but they will usually accept a camping carnet as a substitute. For the small price, it seems well worth having, and I think some of the booking agencies (Select Sites?), will issue them as well. The reason you need to belong to some organisation is that your identity is being confirmed and you are being given some indemnity insurance: the issuer needs to know at least something about you (even if is only that you have paid your subs!).
When we check in to a Campsite we hand over the CCI, some sites copy the details and give it back whilst other sites hold on to it until you leave. It is an Insurance that the site will get it's fee.
You only need 1 per family, we get ours from the C & CC because you fill the details in on the web site and the card comes with your info printed on it.

Our Passports stay firmly in the safe in the van.

Same here, no way do we hand over passports. A few years ago we went to a site in Croatia near Pula. We handed over the CCI, but the lady on reception also wanted our passports. We refused to hand those over, saying that the CCI is sufficient, but she insisted. So we asked for the CCI back and said we would stay elsewhere. All of a sudden she didn't want the passports anymore and checked us in. Always thought that rather suspicious, certainly wouldn't hand over passports.

In my experience, campsites want to hang onto something to discourage you from leaving without paying. That seems fair enough. I have used the ACSI card or my GB C&CC membership card, not a special carnet. There has never been a problem. If you are just stopping overnight, and pay when you check in, most campsites won't ask for anything other than your name and address for their records.
