Considering taking caravan abroad (France initially).

Can anybody supply info re taking pet Yorkshire Terrier with us?

I have read DEFRA site re pet passports, etc., though would appreciate any practical advice from fellow caravanners

What date do you want to go as Pet Passports take about 6 months to get, I think from previous postings.

you need to get your dog chipped first. then you haveto getto the vetsfor injection against rabies, you have to havea blood test, once all the results are confirmed as positive, you are then issued with the dogs passport, this lasts for three years, then your dog has to have another rabie injection.

Once you obtained the dog passport, you are then able to take your dog abroad, but before you can bring it back into the uk country, 6 months has to have elasped since the date of issue of your passport, you have to advise the ferry people that you are taking a dog out of the country, they charge a fee of around £15.00 per journey, per dog, at the end of your visit abroad, you have to visit a local vet for another injection for ticks etc, once the dog has had its injection at the vets you have no more than 48 hours, and not less than 24 hours to get on the boat for the return journey, the charge by the vet abroad varies, buy is usually around £28.00 - £32.00
Again you have advise the ferry people you have a dog with you, and it will be checked on the ferry.
usually on the short crossings, the dog has to stay in the car on the car deck at all times.

Hope this helps you a bit.

Fully agree with previous posters - just a bit of forward planning is needed regarding vets and time scales.

Taking your dog abroad is not realy a problem, the only downside is leaving it in the car on the ferry.

Use the Tunnel, you sit in the car with your dog/s and only 35min crossing.

Hi

We have just returned yesterday from France with our 3 yorkie terriers. I can honestly say i dont know what i was worrying about! They were fantastic on the ferry, we decided on the ferry purely due to cost - tunnel was £500 and ferry was £250. I was very nervous about leaving them in the car as one of them frets a lot but they were all fantastic and just went to sleep. The pet passports were spot on, they didnt want to see them at Dover on the way out, its the way back when all the checks are done. We saw a very good vet in St Omer and everything was spot on. Total bill for 3 dogs with the flea and tick treatments was 77 euros which we thought was excellent.

I am already planning another week away in September to France with them! I wouldnt hesitate to recommend it!

There is also a hotel in Calais where you can stay and they arrange for the vet appt, we were thinking of using this because we have a long drive through France to get to the port.  Can't think of it at the mo but friends of ours recommended it.  Will find out and get back to you - just another option I suppose.  There are also French language print outs you can get regarding what's required if you need to call in a vets if you aren't too good with the language - will also dig that out when the IT buff gets home!
