Hi, we are holidaying at Natters, just outside Innsbruck and taking the Hull - Zeebrugge Ferry.  We are planning our route and stopover sites and the obvious route is via the Fern Pass - has anybody got experience of towing over ther Fern Pass and is it safev to attempt with the van on the back?

We would appreciate any help

Regards  Ali & Neil

We think Fern Pass is perfectly OK for towing.   We have towed over other roads far more severe.
Having said that, others who towed over it thought it was a hair raising experience.

Used the Fern Pass when coming back from Lake Garda two years ago. Despite the torrential rain it was fine. However when we got to the other side the road was closed due to a major accident. We had no alternative to re-trace our steps back over the pass and come back via Oberamagau.

Hi Neil and Ali

I've not been this way myself but I thought this quotation from the Caravan Club's "Caravan Europe" (2006 Ed) might be of use.

"Fern, Austria. Nassereith to Lermoos. 1209 Metres. Minimum road width 6m. Usually open. Obstructed intemittently during the winter. An easy pass but slippery when wet; heavy traffic summer weekends. Connects with Holzieten Sattel pass at Southern end for travel to/from Innsbruck.

The connection with the Holzieten Sattel pass MAY BE A PROBLEM for you as the book says of the HSattle Pass.

"12.5% Usually open. Minimum road width 5m. Road surface good on West side, poor on east. Light traffic, gradients no problem but not recommended for caravans or trailers"

I hope this is of some help.
Tim

Thanks everybody for your replies, which were all helpful.

I think that in the light of Tim & Cary's response we will probably play safe and find another route.

Thanks again

Neil and Ali

Two who have used the pass for travel to/from Innsbruck think it's OK.

We also used it en route to Camping Natterersee and found it fine.

It's perfectly fine. Absolutely no problem in summer, you'll hardly notice you are doing it.  We have a 5.3metre van towing with a mondeo and we sailed through on the way to Lake Garda a few years back.  It's like driving on the right - sounds difficult but it's a cinch.  Been on much, much worse roads.  Even my wife who is paranoid about difficult roads didn't even mention the Fern Pass
