Just wanted to know, has anyone had or heard of any problems with the french police pulling over british drivers and giving them a fine for not having any beam deflectors on their headlights even though on some vehicles with zenon lights it can be done electronicaly. Any replies would be great!

Ive never used beam deflectors or tape since Ive had cars with modern plastic headlights they have a wide flat dipped beam unlike the old glass headlamps that went sharply to the left. I drive on unlit 'N' roads & never get flashed so presumabley I'm not dazzling anybody.
Ive never been pulled by a French copper, you rarely see them.
I read in Camping magazine last year, that at certain times in the summer months the Gendarmes were doing spot checks at Calais and anyone without deflectors fitted had to make a donation to their Christmas Night Out Fund.

Have you had your beam pattern checked then - as a wide flat beam is the symetric pattern used used in most EU countries. GB pattern should be asymetric.
I wouldn't dream of going abroad and not respecting their rules (of the road or otherwise). I always have headlights adjusted either by benders or as with my present car by elecronic adjustment.
I've not been pulled over in 35 years of driving in France but maybe this year will be the first - no you don't see many police around but boy do they appear quickly if there is an incident - and you wouldn't want to argue with them. They'll march you off at the drop of a hat. French friends have always said adopt a yes sir no sir attitude with the gendarmerie/CRS (motards) and I believe them having seen them in action in Paris and on the autoroutes approaching the Spanish border.
It may vary from car to car, but certainly on my Berlingo(new one & previous model)it just has a flat dipped beam same as the French version, the only difference is 2 small points of light pointing to the left. They dont appear to dazzle as I never get flashed.
On older glass lenses it was obvious where you stuck the deflectors/tape on modern clear plastic ones it could be anywhere. Its not a good idea sticking anything on them anyway as they overheat if the headlights are on for long periods & when you remove the deflectors you may see hairline cracks where they have been.
If you must have deflectors its best to buy some plastic headlamp protectors from your main dealer & stick the deflectors on them. Theres no legal requirement to have deflectors in France, the only requirement is that you dont dazzle oncoming traffic.
I cant see how deflectors could work on plastic headlamps anyway. the beam pattern is caused by the reflector shape at the back & would be spread out too much by the time it reached the lens for a deflector or tape to be effective, whereas the glass ones had prismatic lenses which could be directly altered by deflectors or blocked by tape.

Bit of an urban myth that one - Genuine Beambenders guarantee no damage.

The cracks wernt an urban myth on my old Berlingo headlamps, they were actually there, thats why I tried not using deflectors & found I wasnt actually dazzling anybody.
I notice you say you dont use deflectors on yours, how will you explain that to the 'nice policeman' If French coppers are as thick as you imply they are hardly likely to understand electronic adjustment on UK zenon headlamps, any more than my explaination(in reasonable French)for not having deflectors are they?
I suggest you stick some deflectors on to make it look good.
I have an 08 XTrail with HID lamps - the beam pattern definitely flicks up to the nearside. Like the mkI XT I had it has plastic lenses. Unlike the old one you can't get clip on protectors. When I had an old XT I used to stick the benders on the protectors and simply took the protectors off when returned.
So I asked Nissan about the risk of damaging the lens using beam benders and eventually they said:
Anything stuck to the lens of a xenon lamp can cause a hot spot and have the potential to melt the lamp lens, BUT there is no alternative. If it is only for a short time and the residue is cleaned off when they are removed there shouldn't be a problem , however if for instance you are exporting the vehicle then we would recommend you consider about buying left hand drive headlights.
Hmmm. What is a short time?!
Some people have said to adjust the headlights so beam is depressed, but the XT with HIDs has no manual adjustment. By the way the beambenders with the Fresnel type lens do work well.
I have been stopped by the Gendarmes for a "routine check." They checked my documents and my tyres but not the headlamps. However, I don't think the issue is necessarily with the Gendarmes - if you have an accident, depending on the circumstances, it may give you problems with your insurance.

As I speak French - quite easily! You need to seek out genuine Beambenders - not the ones form Halfords and the cheapo shops!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah you must be one of the small and growing minority of British drivers who feel the motoring law's in Europe do not apply to them . Every time i cross the channel i see cars without beambenders or GB signs
And conterary to what you have said about beambenders having little or no effect on clear plastic headlamps your wrong . My car to has clear plastic headlamps and i have clip on stone chip protectors with clearly defined markings for beambenders when in Europe which when fitted DO alter the beam pattern and they are also available for the berlingo

Well if you genuinely want to give advice on this forum perhaps you could enlighten us all as to where you do get these genuine beambenders?
I can only speak(& give advice)from my own experiences about the car I actually drive. If you drive at night on a dark single carriageway road in France & no oncoming traffic flashes you up you can conclude that you are not dazzling anybody.
Chances are you can get away without fitting beambenders (cheap or otherwise). Just because you're not flashed by oncoming traffic doesn't necessarily mean you're not dazzling them. The French (and those of us that live here now) use the 'flash' for other things - notably warning of gendarmes ahead, or a speed trap, or an accident, or a cow on the road...
You may not always see the big GB sticker either, as it's legal for UK regd. vehicles to carry the EU symbol on the number plate.
There is evidence that the gendarmes have been pulling mainly UK vehicules over for spot checks at the ports and just outside. This was in October when the laws over triangles and vests came into force. I've never spoken to anyone who's been pulled over wrt beambenders being fitted ou pas.
