Recently moved to Belgium near Mons from UK (work) looking at camping South of France/ Italy in Summer. Can anyone give me an idea on drive times some say South of France 8hrs / 10hrs etc. We are looking for a site walking distance to beach & town (for a Pint).

Check out http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=8639 50mtr from the beach, within walking distance of Antibes, train station outside the site, 4 Euro west to Cannes or East to Nice, around an hour to Monaco on the train, defo worth a visit, peak season 26 Euro per night for large tent/car and two persons inc EHU, my Son is there at the moment and gives the site the thumbs up. hope that helps.

If you're going to Italy I'd think about an alternative to travelling through France - you could avoid a lot of tolls.

Thanks for your replies had a look at http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=8639 looks really good. The only problem is they do not take bookings for tents seems they operate a first come first served basis, a long way to travel (wing it!) and find there is no pitch avai when you get there. Originaly look at first week in August understand that is the very peak of the season, would slipping a week or 2 earlier into July improve my pitch chances.

Hi Ratty.

Review to follow as soon as my Son gets back, if/when!, I have asked him to measure the pitches as they look compact from the txt photo he sent me, although he is down at the beach for a swim at the moment, Hi arnie321, I e-mailed the site first to book a pitch, had to use google translater which made for an interesting exchange, although sorted in the end, when I have been in the past 70's/80's I used to send a SAE to the site around November for July booking, they always came back to me and assured me of a pitch, never had a problem, for a two week stay, although things may have changed. could be different owners from the days when I used to go, as for July I would say from the second week it is just as busy as August. I am thinking of going last two weeks of June next year at 22.5 Euro inc EHU quite cheap, and also will be a lot less folk around at that time, even though good, the weather is not guaranteed like July/August.

You may struggle to get a beachside pitch in August at this late stage, try somewhere just inland if you are struggling. Or like you say try a little earlier.

I would allow one overnight coming from Calais and even that will be two long days I seem to remember its about 700miles. Don't think of flying at 95mph, the speed traps are frequent and sneaky on the autoroute. Also long queues at some tolls can be expected especially the first weekend in August when Paris heads south.

Remember it will be very hot, 35deg+ is common and still 25ish at night. We hit 42deg on the last leg to the coast last year! nearly passed out when getting out of the air conned car to fuel up!

Hi Arnie,
We live in Belgium (on the border just outside Maastricht) Whenever we drive down to the south of France for camping we always have an overnighter usually in the Dordogne (we really like Le Capeyrou at Beynac et Cazenac), this drive takes us about 9.5 hours so with a good early start we arrive in nice time to pitch we tend to stay 2 nights and have a relaxing day potering the area before driving the rest of the way down, we find that it really halps to make the journey relaxing.
Hope this helps your planning, John.

John,

Thanks for the advice, we live in the Mons area of Belgium we are heading for Antibes in the South of France - Camping Du Pylone. Tom tom tells me 10hr journey, looking at setting off at 1500hrs on a Friday driving for 5 hrs or so overnight in a hotel continue on the next morning to arrive in resort early afternoon. Any recommendations.

Many thanks

Arnie
