We have narrowed our search down for a week in June to 2 sites in northern France (Picardie / Nord Pas de Calais):

L'Oree du Bois (near Berck- Plage)
or
Les Aubepines (near Le Crotoy)

There is very little info on this site for L'Oree du Bois and nothing that I can find for Les Aubepines.

Has anyone stayed or have any information about either of these sites please to help us decide.

We have a caravan and a dog.

Thanks

Guess you are using ACSI card? You should for these two sites, a worthwhile saving.

We had a week at L'Oree du Bois in Sept. The camping pitches are in the woods, and some distance from the entrance/exit, so it's quiet. (Ideal for dog walking too, away from the pitch areas). A good choice of pitches, some in the sun, half and half etc, you can choose. The toilet/shower block is modernish. When the campsite was quiet, they closed half of it, the ladies side, so it became a "unisex" facility, presumably to save cleaning the whole thing. Good hot water supply, washing up facs excellent. The pool is heated and covered, with sunbeds around, but limited opening 10-12 and 2-5 as I remember, but its all free. Good for "iffy" weather though. There is also an outdoor pool, but we didn't use that!  Next to the campsite is a Lidl, Intermarche, Brico and Restau marche, so handy for shopping without using the car. We used bikes. In the town of Berck is a large Carrefour supermarket. The beach is a drive away, typical seaside resort shops and cafes, but seemed quite nice.

We have also used this site a couple of times before for overnight stops. The welcome has always been very warm, and at Christmas we received a 2009 Calendar of events from them, of events in the local area . Hope this helps. Sorry but haven't used the other site.

L'Oree du Bois I cannot comment, though the comment above "pitching in the woods" means I've "bookmarked it" for the future! Mind you Berck isn't my cup-of-tea due to its 60's/70's drab concrete.

Les Aubepines - We were there last week of May 2008, which is basically the same as June, as far as busy/not busy goes. Smallish site. Mix of private hire mobiles (not tour operators), season pitches and (a minority) touring pitches.

Pitches range from "very" fully hedged "get your van in if you are a contortionist" to 200m2+ non-hedged plots on the periphary. The lanes to the pitches are flat but some a bit tightish for a car & van (as in the hedges were planted when were very small and the lanes looked wide). The owner will nip in his golf cart and assist you though.

Owner a "cautious" but nice chap, responds well to French! One other Brit on site, but mainly Dutch retirees.

Small basic shop. Bread etc available off season.

Small but nice swimming pool. Don't think woofer is allowed in.

No bar. No ents. No rowdiness. But a few folk having a chat and gentle laughs until midnight. Commonsense stuff.

An adjacent field has several tents that I can only describe are used by French "Duke of Edinburgh" Bronze schoolkids with bikes. No issue at all, unless you happen to go to the unisex (very modern) facilities at the time they all decide to brush their teeth.

You are in the Baie de Somme and the beach is a 10 minute walk away. Chances are though you won't see the sea! It is an estuary beach and despite going there 6 times in one day we did not see it covered. Absolutely perfect for dogs though. (Suggest you check neap & spring tides for Le Crotoy and adjust by 10 mins)

Le Crotoy market (Friday) down the road is a must as is the local butchers for salle d'agneau. St Valerie (technically walkable across the sands) is also very good (Esp. Sunday AM). Some good eateries around. But don't think it is all Jules Verne & William the Conq histoire.

The best traditional beach & sea is at Fort Mahon (15 mins away). Another largely concrete job, I'm afraid, but small enough to park the car for free in June and enjoy the beach. Dogs all over the place despite signs to the contrary.

Finally the owners have a lovely largish dog. It "owns" the place - God forbid if you want to go through the exit barriers when it is sat in the middle of the road during sleepy time!

Overall it is okay - no noisy commercial gravel digging at 6am like on other neighbouring sites. But not one of the "100 sites you must visit before you die".

VB

Thanks very much for responses - it really helps to get some personal experiences.

I think we're going to go for L'Oree du Bois.
