Hi, can anyone recommend a campsite in the French Alps, only requirement good views, near or in nice village, and walking from site with dog! Also, how long to drive from Calais and how long from there to the Tarn Gorge? Many thanks in advance.

We stayed here a couple of years ago, very popular site with UKCS members. We found it very busy in June as they take in rallies and were erecting new chalets for Thomsons but it may have settled down a bit now.

We did it in two days, we stopped at Troyes each way at the municipal site.

Have stayed in Le Plan du Fernuy just outside La Clusaz a couple of times , though not for 3 or 4 years. Lovely site, pitches pretty gravelly if you have a tent, but manageable. A longish walk from La Clusaz but there was also a free 'ski bus' which passed the site. Wonderful views, small bar/takeaway, excellent indoor poor with views of mountains. Would definitely recomment it.

Passed by a campsite near Bourg D'Osians (not sure if this is the correct spelling) on the way to Alp D'heuz.
Great location, scenery awesome. Great walking on the mountain.
Would imagine it is lovely in summer.

thanks, will have a look at them all. Would we have to drive through those veeerrrrrry long tunnels to get to the French Alps from Calais?

I don't recall there being too many tunnels on the route to Le Grand Bornand but I could be wrong. There were a few on the motorway outside Annecy but not horrific tunnels, more the open sided ones.

We camped about 2 hours north of the Gorge du Tarn at Campsite La Fridière, Paulhaguet (N45.19969 E 3.52057) - good walks from the campsite an excellent village with shops and market. (There is also beautiful tourist train through the Gorge d'Allier from Langeac to Langogne - Gorge d'Alliers Train )
About 5 hours east of Gorge du Tarn in a much more mountainous area is the town of Embrun, set in the valley from Braincon, with easy access to the Lac de Serre-Poncon (Lake website ) We camped at Campsite Les Tourelles, Embrun (N44.55846 E 6.48225) - Scottish and French owners. Loads of shady pitches, mountains all around.

Have pitched at a campsite just outside, Chamonix, certainley worth a drive through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, not to mention the cable car rides, outstanding, the town of Chamonix is quite special.

It looks like a wonderful area, so much to see. I think I will try out Les Domes des Miage unless I pass something and try out on speck. Will post review on whichever site we go to.
