I'm going to pitch in with a vote for Asterix!

We went as an extended family last October, 2 days in Disney and only one in Asterix, 4 adults 5 kids aged 14,11,10,9,8, each and every one of the kids voted for Asterix. Adults did too as the roller coasters are SO much better! That 7 Loop thing had the 14 year old hurling!

The shows were better as you could actually SEE stuff, rather than being shoved out of the way to see Mikey and Sully from Monsters inc.

We stayed at Le Croix de Vieux point (About an hour away) we were in a static, but the camping looked just as well appointed.

We did a fortnight in Florida many years ago with our two older children and loved Disney.

We have been to Disneyland Paris twice, once for a day on the way home and we loved it and the next time for 3 days where it seemed to drag a bit. Our children were almost 11 and had laregely outgrown it I think. It certainly didn't have the magic I remembered.

We have only been to Parc Asterix once, and I would echo what Valk_scot said. The rides are better, the queuing is much less and the food is better. It feels distinctly French, where Disney feels American with a French tinge. It helped that my son was a huge Asterix fan anyway and he still talks fondly years later about his "wild boar burger" which made his whole holiday.

I have gone from the woman who used to get nervous on the roller coaster at Legoland to the woman who is front of the queue for every rollercoaster. My son persuaded me to go on that 7-loop thing (Gondatrix??) and it was only after I was strapping myself in that I realised I was probably the oldest person there by about twenty years. Then DS and I went round three times (there were no quesues at all that day) and by the end of it I could hardly walk. What an adrenaline blast! I didn't throw up though.....

The other thing I liked about Parc Asterix is that they seemed to feel it was perfectly sufficient to put a low rope and notice round things like the lake saying "Please keep out." and leave it to you to figure out that your toddler would get wet if they fell. in. Rather than six foot high chain link fences like in Disneyland. Or was that to corral you in closer to the shops?

I personally think that if they took away all the shops, stalls and fast food outlets in Disneyland you would be left with a handful of very mediocre rides, a lot of very long queues and a bunch of rather fed up folk in costume trying to fit in as many photo-opportunities as possible. Call me cynical or what, but the only music in my ears was the chink-chink-chink of the tills and frankly that degree of commercialisation leaves me feeling a bit sick.  As I said we had two days of passes and we very nearly didn't go back for the second day. At Parc Asterix we nearly had to be swept out the park both days and will go back again.

Nothing is wrong with that at all, if that is what you like.

I go to France because I like France. I like the people, I like the food, I just like being there.

I am, at best, ambivalent about America.

So that contributes to my preference for Parc Asterix over Disneyland Paris.

I think Disney is great for younger children, but now my boys are older, they can't stand the characters, hate the queues with a passion and find most of the rides quite uneventful. They loved it when they were little though. This year when we stayed at Le Croix de Vieux Pont, we didn't visit Disneyland and it was the best £150+ I've saved, as our holiday friends went and had an awful time, mainly due to the queues. So next year, Asterix here we come.

As an adult (with OH too) I have to say we loved Parc Asterix too, as did both our sons.  They'd both been to Disney in Florida and absolutely hated the commercialism, but they loved all the rides at Asterix, as previously mentioned the wild boar burgers, and the amazing shows which you can actually sit down and watch.   We went on most of the roller coasters, and I'm not a fan, but even I enjoyed the whole day.
