You need the original docs, registration, MOT and insurance cert for the car if it is yours, along with all parts of your licence. It is a good idea to take a copy with you.

If it is someone elses car you will need written permission from the owners. Have a look on the RAC and Caravan Club web sites for full info.

What EU driving license?  Is this something new?

"We're off to France next Friday and can't remember if I should be taking my car's registration document and the paper part of my EU driving licence."

I Have lost my driving license over the weekend,  i am travel to france on sunday, i have just spoken to the DVLA, they have informed me that i will have a new licence back before friday, but if not dont worry!! if i get pulled up they will send confirmation to the french police that i hold a full uk driving license, lets hope the DVLA get the there fingers out and sort it, or the police dont pull me as my french is very poor,,,

but the question i have,  do i need to show a driving license at the ferrry???

Missed this thread for a while. OK so you don't need the MOT for your car for France. However, you might need to produce it at UK Customs, and yes I know you can produce it later at a police station, but it could save time and effort later on. Having had a friend who had his car impounded at Dover until the original MOT was produced. Thankfully he lived in Dartford so a train journey home sorted it. Perhaps the newer electronic MOTs have eliminated this problem?

With regards to copies, I take a copy as well as the originals, so that if the French Police want a copy they can have it there and then rather than dragging you to the Gendarmerie. At the end of the day it is up to the traveller
