However did we survive without sat nav? What about being aware of whats going on?.

I can't speak for everyone with sat nav but we always make sure (when we are towing) that we have an idea of the route and where we will have to go.  But that is the reason we went wrong in Rouen, I had it in my head that we had to follow Le Mans but the sat nav wanted us to get off at an exit marked industrial area so I ignored it and thus began our nightmare tour of Rouen.  In that case the sat nav did know better than I did and I would have done better to have followed it blindly!

Whenever people discuss routes there are always those who are really anti-sat nav.  This is the thing that intrigues me: if you don't like it, don't use it, fair enough - but why so much resentment towards other people who do?

Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread.... back to Rouen.  17

Not anti sat nav, I'll accept anything that makes life easier, Only against the way some people use it. Otherwise how do 40 ton trucks get stuck up country lanes, and a lot of caravans for that matter.

I agree with your point re use thereof, use it as you wish. But on an info forum, I think it is worth noting that in this particular case the junction occurs on an urban route with a lot of off slips, and possibly confusing signage, so the simple advice in my view is to point out the clear and obvious signs, which in this case are white and green, and can be seen clearly in advance. In France particularly there sre signs on every junction, many of which are for McDonalds, and every hotel in the town, does n't mean you have to respond to hem.

As you say  "back to Rouen" and this question crops up every few months , so for someone who claims to be a "frought newbie"  , with or without sat nav, the simple directions work.

Hmm... Rouen has "ruined" two return journeys for us... both times we ended up needing petrol & food in Rouen and couldn't find an open station for love nor money so had to detour from the Mappy directions and then got totally lost and ended up hungry, stressed and late for the ferry at Calais.

We decided if we ever have to go North that way again we will pay the premium for fuel & food on the mway services and go straight through following the directions without detour... never had a problem going south, but then it doesn't coincide with a petrol stop that way LOL!   Mappy takes you over the river and seems pretty straightforward once you realise that all the different road names are actually the same road...

If you are using a sat nav for convienience ie finding a specific address, ok, but if you want to drive thru or around a city by the easiest route you need to at least have an idea of where you are going.

Industrial areas do tend to be around ring roads. You state you got lost because you disobeyed the orders from your sat nav. Well next time either have faith in your sat nav & obey it's instructions or use a map.

We have travelled South through Rouen twice and North once and have got through without any concerns. I asked the same question the first time and was advised to hit the  zone industrielle. As it happens, thats the way the Sat-Nav took us. Good luck.
