Hi Folks

Just returned from Le Parc de Ferbois in Loire valley.  This is our second trip doing it ourselves.

1.  Airbeds are not comfortable - it aggrevated an old rugby injury - we are thinking of taking a futon cover next year to put on top of the airbed.  ANY SUGGESTIONS?

2. Don't plan to set up camp more than once with a large tent and 4 x kids!!!  We booked the holiday in Feb, and planned to stay2 x nights in Calais but changed our minds.  Partly because of the effort, but also because I now have a new job and need to move house.  Started thinking 10 days in about all the work I needed to do and came home yesterday.  Stopovers (in the absence of a caravan) are more appealing in travel lodges!!!!

3. We had big improvements this year - fridge, electric, patio table, proper chairs.  Next year, we will take a gazebo, ground sheet for outside the tent.

We can thoroughly recommend Le parc de ferbois - lovely site and huge pitches - ours had a bit of shade, being under the trees to an extent.

Cheers

David

Sound like you had a great site David. I few thoughts in return:

1. Why don't you try camping beds instead of airbeds? I don't mind airbeds, but I know a few people who swear by camping beds.

2. I agree - the thought of pitching more than once is too much for us as well.

3. Same here. I'd recommend some form of shelter for outside - it's really great to be able to extend your living space. Some people seem to object to gazebo's and we use an Outwell Tarp as it's properly waterproof and we feel it's more flexible than a gazebo.

Have you reviewed the site? I find the site reviews very useful.

We are thinking of doing France next year in our own tent as when we have previously gone we have always hired statics!!! We are thinking of going to the vendee and doing a stopover along the way, we will take our much smaller overnight tent for this so we can be set up in about 1/2 hour!!!! Saves putting up a huge frame tent in 1- 1 1/2 hours!!!!

We use the overnight ferry to Caen when we go to the Vendee. Breaks the journey up beautifully and means you're not setting off really early to get the ferry and not rushing to the campsite before it goes dark.

When tenting with the kids, we would normally use two small tents for the first overnight stop. Usually we would stay there for two to four days, depending upon the region. The final destination would be e.g. the Pyrenees. We would stay for a week to 14 days there, and then choose an nice place for a few days on the way back.

The other approach we used is to choose two destinations for about a week to 10 days each.

To the Massif Central we would travel in one day. This region allows for a well spent holiday.

The short stays with the small (tunnel)tents, the longer stays with the big tent, and the kids in the small tunneltents. If the pitch would be a bit smaller, one kid in the large tent, the other one in the tunneltent and switch every few days.

This way we would not have all the effort for the shorter stays.

As a bed we would use self-inflatables. They proved much more of a comfort than airbeds.

I agree that a fridge is excellent in France is excellent. We have a gas electrolux fridge - so dont need an electic hook up! This was purchased as milk etc. kept going off as we couldnt change the freezer blocks frequently enough for the heat!

We probably committed a sin or something but last year we (her, me, 2 kids) drove to southern Brittany from Dunkirque and stopped off at B&B's in Abbeville and Mont St Michel. It saved a lot of hassle and wasn't that expensive.

We did a similar thing the year before when we went to the Vendee using Dover/Calais route - stopping Nr Mont St Michel on the way over and then a stop Nr Dieppe on the way back both B & B's booked via the internet very good and as Pedro says not very expensive and a wonderful way to start and finish the holiday.  We actually used the B & B we used a couple of years ago this year as a short break holiday as we didn't want to be away too long (kids at home 17 & 19) and the expense of taking the trailer over to France we used Speedferries and got a crossing for £50.00 had the short break and fitted in a shopping trip too.

Rinty

Camp beds probably worth a try, and yes, I must put in a review - the campsite restaurant was superb!  - Cider was out of this world btw (a Normandy speciality)

Robin

The fees were about £30 per night - the pitches were monstrously big, so a big plus.  I booked with P+ O with a trailer in Feb for £150

Caroline - problem with Eurocamp is that they are a rip off - this years hol (fees+ferry) = £450.  Eurocamp would be £1200+ I think!!!
